My daughter has an 01 NB that underneath the oil fill cap there is a thick yellow substance. There is visible water inside the cap along with the yellow gunk. Its almost like a blown head gasket but the car is not loosing any coolant or overheating. Any ideas?
-   I seem to have a problem with water or it may just be condensation around my oil filler cap which is causing the gunkey cream to appear. I had my cylinder head done just before xmas, so it shouldnt be that but ive give it a thrashing every now and then but its still wet, can anyone help as it doesnt look very nice and its putting me off the car..-   stodd1066

Bill,
When was the last time that the oil was changed on the car? It could be that condensation has built up inside the engine and the oil, and the churning motion has blended the two together. No to sound sexist, but does your daughter baby the car? It may need a good hard drive to burn the moisture out of the oil. If the car isn't getting this, it can cause these types of troubles.
Let us know what happens,

I agree with Peter. If she takes a lot of short drives, especially in areas with cool damp weather, she need to change the oil more often than specified and to try to get a longer drive (like 30-60 minutes) more often. She does not need to drive fast, but does need to get it up to full operating temperature (not just when the cold light goes off).
Another possible problem would be a thermostat that is too cool or is sticking open.

That's just the highest place in the crankcase breather system and the condensation buildup is normal. Also, it doesn't get hot enoguh to evaporate the moisture if your NB isn't driven that long. Bottom line... don't worry!

Another way of restating Peter's comment is that sludge and condensation appear when a car is not driven long enough for the oil to get hot. Short trips to school or work are really hard on an engine. My car takes about 7 miles before the oil has gotten warm and by the time I am at work it has gotten plenty hot to evaporate any condensation. I have about 44 mile one way commute. Many vehicles will form a nasty sludge if the car is used for trips where walking or a bicycle is a more practical vehicle.

Thanks for all the great responses. The car is driven alot and not on short trips. She has 45k on it. I think she needs to change the oil more often although the stuck t.stat might be something to check. Thanks again...I will keep u posted.
