Toyota clutch problem

By Bouncy - usenet poster

I have a 1991 Celica GT and had the clutch replaced less than two years ago.
It was replaced by my Toyota dealer as the original one had over 100,000KMs
and I hoped that if I replaced it with an OEM from Toyota that I may get
close to that again. But the replacement clutch only has 56,000KMs and the
dealer told me it needs to be replaced again.

My driving has not changed, I am the only one to drive the vehicle and I am
easy on the clutch. I think this is why I got over 100,000KMs on the original
one.

Did I get a bad clutch job? I paid more to have it replaced by the dealer
then a private garage. Is there better quality clutch that I should use to
prevent this in the future? Any help would be great as I don't know a lot
about clutches.

I replaced my own clutch on my 85 Celica GTS with an aftermarket one (Borg and
Warner?). After the tough task of dropping the tranny, it was an easy
replacement. I think I got about 150,000 out of the original clutch, and only
had to replace it because the throwout bearing and fork slipped out of place.
But the new clutch worked fine for another 35K miles before I (just) sold the
car. It shuddered a little, but that's probably because I didn't have the
flywheel resurfaced. The clutch parts were about $100. Labor was free. :-)

Do you live in a hilly area? Or do you do a lot of city driving? My 86
Toyota truck has 286K
on the original clutch. this is mostly of highway miles.

Clutches do fail due prematurely due to lack of pedal free play (clutch slips
because it isn't fully engaged).
