I have this complicated problem, need some help. Don't ask me how I have got the following figures, it just happens this way.
There are two car for me to consider buying, a 1998 Accord Coupe EX V6 (well maintained with 57,000KM + Full Honda body kit) and a 2001 VW Jetta 2.0 GLS (Brand new). The price for the Accord is around Cdn $20,000 and Cdn $17,000 for the Jetta (Both prices include all taxes and any charges). If you are me, which will you choose?
The things that I will have to give up if I do buy the Jetta instead of the Accord are as follow: Sunroof, Leather seats, 200HP (Jetta has only 115HP), 16" Alloy wheels, Audio control on the steering wheel (which I love), Automatic climate control and Honda reliability. On the other side, the Jetta has 2 years warranty + no charge maintenance and it is a 5 spd manual transmission.
This is a very difficult decision for me since I like both vehicles. What will you choose?
Firstly, what are your requirements in terms of space? Do you have a family or will you be carrying passengers? The Accord is a good-sized sedan whereas the Jetta has less interior space than the old Civic. However, the Jetta does not have a small car feel - it is very solid and rides and handles well. Unfortunately, the noisy 2.0L I4 detracts from these strengths. I highly recommend you upgrade to the 1.8t.
Wait a minute, you can get a brand new Jetta GLS 2.0L for only $17k Cdn out the door?? How come so cheap?? The MSRP on this car (with no options) is $24k Cdn + tax. Even the cheapest GL is still $22k Cdn +. Let me know where you're getting such a good price - I may have to buy one too!
If your price on the Jetta is correct, then that's a much better deal than the Accord. The question then is whether or not you can live with the cramped interior and weaker engine.
Regards,
Gerald

I don't know about which one is nicer, I just want to know where you found a 2001 Jetta GLS for CDN $17,000!!!! That's like $11,800 US dollars...
Here's what I would do... buy the GLS from the sucker that's selling it to you, then sell it for CDN $24,500 (still below value) then buy that Honda and keep the difference!!!!

Jetta 2.0L GLS starts at 23-24000$ so you are using wrong figures. Taxes extras.
If you don't mind the automatic, Accord all the way.
Also should be considered depending on your preferences; Acura 1.7EL (21.5K$CDN), Mazda Proteg?? ES GT and Focus SE/ZTS.

To correct one thing, it's a 1998 Accord Coupe (2-door) and I do not have a family. The reason I got the car so cheap it's becasue I have a deal to buy the car at $23,000 (on the road) and if I sell my (currently leasing) Accord, I can make around $6,000 to $7,000 for it. That's why I treat the price for the Jetta as $23,000. And for $23,000, it is an amazing deal for the Jetta 2.0L. And there is no special on the 1.8T : (
Too bad for you, the sales is over. You may want to try it yourself, it's Bytek VW in Ottawa.

Like I said, nevermind where I have these figures. This is going to be my correct figure. And yes, all taxes and charges included.

Smells bad...

I never said that the dealer is selling the car for $17,000. I just said that $17,000 is what will come out of my pocket. And mind you again that "out of my pocket" does not mean that the Jetta is costing that much. It is a very complicated thing to explain. So, I'm just going to leave it. Thanks for your input.

get the Accord. Jettas are chick rides. ;-)
all kidding aside, i think the Accord is what you really want. it seems like you really want a car with lots of creature comforts. and the Jetta just doesn't deliver in this case. the only thing the Jetta has going for it is the 5 speed and the free maintenence. woo... hoo... big deal.
buy the Accord: more refined than the Jetta, more power than the Jetta, more reliable than the Jetta, better resale value than the Jetta.

Just for your last point, do you really think the Accord will have a better resale value than the Jetta in 2 years?
Assuming two years later and I added 40,000Km for my car. The Accord will have 100,000Km and the Jetta will only have around 40,000Km. Will you buy an Accord for $15,000? or will you buy the Jetta for $15,000? That is one big issue that is going on in my mind. I know the Accord will still be a good car after 100,000Km, but I am guessing that it is somewhat difficult to sell.

On my 98 accord, how do i take off the trim assembly to replace the light bulb for the clock and fan dial? There are two screws at the very bottom, but are there clips, too?
