Question about 1994 Suzuki Sidekick

1 Answer

Shifting into first gear is difficult for my 1994 Suzuki since I had an oil change a week ago. I have to force it, or yesterday I pumped the clutch two to three times before getting it into first gear. And, now, reverse gear requires some effort. All the other gears are fine, and when I couldn't get into first gear in traffic today, I went into second gear softly, and that worked. It seems to block when I attempt getting into first gear, and the same for reverse. Then I try to shove the gearshift through, finding a soft spot that lets me push it through. Thanks.

Have it scanned for codes and go from there, it could be anything at this point from something electrical to internal transmission failure. Check the fluid and make sure it is clean and full. Also check the shift linkage, its got loose. Also get the clutch alignment checked. the clutch plate sticking and not allowing it to shift. get car scanned at diagnosis center to get error codes, At diagnosis center you will receive the error code.As per the error code it will detect the exact faulty part in the car due to which the problem is occurring. For more help :--- at www.autozone.com its absolutely free to get car scanned.

I have a suzuki xl-7 2005 manual and is hard to change gear does this mean the clutch is gone or is there a easy fix

This is pretty easy to trouble shoot.
first off , assume it's a simple easy fix. it can be.
not 8 to 10 hours labor jerking the tranny and 4wd parts.etc.
hard to change gears can mean many things.
1: cant select. this is common, the shifter tip has 2 plastic parts
that cause the shifter to do 2 things, its loose as heck and
cause , SELECTION failure. that is ,you can not move the shifting
forks inside the tranny. is the reason, this is shifter failure.
Suzuki sells the parts, ,shown in link below.

2: hard to shift , #2 is , but you can not force any gears
reverse is the most difficult. and if you try hard enough
the transmission grinds. this is clutch failure. (1 of 2, ways)
3: if the clutch is failing, called DRAG. (not slip, no noise or chatter)
you can jackup the rear of car, at the axle place 2 jack stands
under said axle housing ends and now you can shift.
proving a bad clutch as it now shifts but in a clunky way.

ok, now we are in the Dragging bad clutch fails.
the first easy fix, is easy.
is called,a "bad clutch actuator"
on early cars this part is a cable (replace the cable)
on later cars the actuator is a MC/slave hydraulic pedal sys..
The cable clutch you do...the.. do the 1 inch test. see link.
on Hyd. do the 3/4 inch test. see the link.

this proves the clutch is good or bad , every time.
if the clutch lever fails to move the correct distance.
no clutch can work, fix the actuator first.
this page gets them all.

Clutch or transmission?

Could be a bad fly wheel, could be a bad transmission oil pump out of place.

I'm sure if your car have cable or clutch fluid but check both the cable can be adjusted and the other you might need a clutch replacement.

i would check the throwout bearing, if this is the problem try starting in first go for a while than try up shifting to second. after a while your transaxle should warm up making an easier gear transition. ( this only partains to bad throwout bearing )

92 Honda Accord, 5 speed, hard shifting into first & second gear.

First thing to do,try to pump your clutch before you shift into 1st gear then if you feel makes better, most probably you have problem with your hydraulic clutch system, check the clutch line if there is an evidence of fluid leaking or it could be internal leak.

Second thing to do, check your transmission oil, may be it' s too old or you use a thick oil thats why when cold its hard to shift then when the engine rich the normal temperature(warm) the oil become thin and the shifting will smooth. Remember the very old oil become thicken and the purity is gone and can cause of hard shifting. in this regards i suggest you to change the transmission oil and check the used oil if there is small peace of metals, then you are in big trouble,
