Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Car runs fine the first15 to 20 miles. Then the engine sounds like it is speeding up and then bogging down over and over. When this happens the temperature gauge will go back and forth from cool to hot (not in the red though.) So far there is no check engine light coming on. All fluid levels have been checked. Another problem with the car is it pops. I've only heard it pop when backing out and turning the car. 1998 Chevy Cavalier Automatic with 92,000 miles. Thank you

HI! The erratic idling can be caused by a faulty MAF (mass air flow) sensor. If the MAF is faulty a very unusual engine performance is noticeable so you will need to have the MAF replaced. Regarding the unusual behavior of the temperature, there are two things too look at. First, the radiator blower can be faulty that sometimes it doesn't turn when engine is hot. Second is, the temp sending unit maybe faulty thats why the temp reading goes up and down, this will need replacement too to correct the problem. HOpe this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

You need to get the engine trouble codes by performing the "keydance" or using a code reader, then start checking fuel pressure at pump and regulator. Best luck. Amclaussen.

Car shuts off while driving, push in clutch, car back to life

that sounds like wiring or connection issue.
I would firstly try getting a wiring schematic of the vehicles loom then find all the earth points and start by cleaning those and making sure there is clean and secure earth connections

At Idle Runs Fine, 50% throttle runs like ****

It could be a lot of things, if you can run some component testing. You should be able to narrow it down. Test the TP, EGR, IAC sensor, Look, does the car act up at high throttle while in neutral or just when its in gear? You may want to check the timing and look inside the distributor for any signs of water, rust, or carbon build-up.

try by starting off with getting a computer scan for diagnostic trouble codes.ther should at least be a history code stored. it sounds like maybe a cam sensor problem , but the scan should shed more light on the course of repair.
good luck chris

next time it happens try spraying water in mist form around the throttle body if it bogs, replace the throttle body gasket. if it doesn't bog you may have a bad wire wait until dark start the vehicle have someone feed the fuel very slowly and watch for arching from a wire it will be easy to see when it is dark, replace that wire.
