Auxiliary audio input on 2006 5 series?

By kioner - usenet poster

I went to test drive the 550i today and really liked it. But
unfortunately it didn't have an auxiliary input for a portable audio
device like the new 330i does. I listen to a lot of Podcasts to and
from work, so this feature is pretty important to me.

I asked one of the parts guys about it and he said "no problem, we can
install the auxiliary input in your glove box, the part is $75 plus
labor".

Has anyone had this done? Is it something I could do myself, or
should I have the dealer do it?

Thanks in advance...

I wanted to use an ipod with my 2001 e39 and decided to go for the DICE ipod integration system. It plugs into where the factory cd stacker goes in the boot. Control via the steering wheel buttons and track/artist/album info displayed on the MFI/Radio.
Sounds as good as the sampled bitrate will allow.
The unit also has an additional aux input for DVD player or navigation etc

The information I've found online indicates that 'This unit must be activated by a BMW Dealer' yet there is nothing in the above instructions that indicates as such. Is this a 'plug-and-play' install or do you need to take it to a dealer?

Also does doing this work yourself void any warranties?

I have a 2007 550i. The aux stereo mini plug is in the read console. Looks like a headphone jack. Says "aux" if I'm not mistaken.

Aux input is direct audio input to your deck, no sound degradation like a transmitter since you are sending a radio signal, recieving the signal and converting it to sound. Aux input is the way to go for CD quality sound.

Have it on an '05 545i. Works great. No way to get integration with
iDrive, but you can install the aux port to get good sound.

Thanks for the info and link to the instructions. That's very
helpful. I assume there is no sound degradation when using the Aux
input? Right not I'm using an FM transmitter on my 330i and it sounds
horrible...
