Hey all, A friend has a 1991 pickup 4wd w/a 4 cyl. 140,000 miles It has been overheating constantly recently. He has replaced the theromstat, and many waterpumps( after he bought and tried a rebuilt, he bought a new generic, then a new Toyota w.p.) to no avail. The radiator has been rodded for clear passages. He can drive it easily around,w/o incident. Unfortunately, the road to his home is uphill about 1.5 miles, by the time he geta back home the truck is spewing it's guts. I thought there might be a head gasket problem.
Is there anyone else that has this problem??? could there be an inherent design problem??
If it has an electric fan, check the fan motor and the coolant temp sensor and the fan wiring.

that's a very reliable engine. I've got 185k on mine with no problems. Some folks have made it twice that.
Friend with an older model went crazy swapping stuff only to find out the lower rad hose had come apart and the spring was interfering with the water flow. a long shot. spewing sounds serious. i'd also check for exhaust in coolant - head gasket or cracked head.
I had the same problem. I replaced the radiator purchased from NAPA for $125 that solved the problem. The old ones cooling ability was reduced from radiator stop leak

Sounds like it could be the fan clutch. They're easily damaged.

Where does it spew from ? How old is the radiator cap? How much anti-freeze fluid does he use? It might be possible there is an air bubble in the coolant line somewhere. If there is steam coming out the exhaust pipe, it is a cracked head and the engine would not run very long when super hot.

Hi !
Check your coolant for oil mix or your spark plug for green spot, this could be your head gasket. Check your fan for good operating temperature. This could be a defective temp sensor or a defective thermostatic fan.

What could be causing my 91' Toyota pickup to lock-up. We've replaced the rear end twice, the clutch twice and the transmission once but the problem keeps coming back. It's like you're holding down the brake pedal as you're attempting to move both forward (in any gear) and backward in reverse. If you turn it off and let it set for a while the brake pedal eventually loosens up, unlocks and it drives normally again until the next time it starts to stick and the same cycle starts all over again.
