You should still have a dip stick located to the passenger rear of the motor. Check the fluid with the truck running in park and warmed to operating temperature.

There is a resistor in the box that controls fan speed. That resistor can melt the wires making the circuit.
My 94 Dakota has this resistor on the firewall. Yours may be under the dash.
You may also have a faulty fan switch. It is also possible to have problems with the brushes inside the motor.

I have had my engine out (1991 Cougar 5.0), and I did it separately. I do not think both could be removed at the same time with a conventional engine hoist. It is a pain separating them. Be sure to replace the rear main seal!!

How to remove a 68 ford mustang fender?

The fenders don't have to come off to remove the motor. Scribe a line around the hood hinges where they're attached to the hood and then get a friend to help remove the hood. Remove radiator. Disconnect exhaust, fuel lines, electrical connections, motor mount, hoses, remove tranny mounts, disconnect tranny linkages and cooler lines. Drop rear U joint and remove drive shaft. Plug drive shaft hole with a rubber stopper or a rag. Use a chain and an engine hoist to remove the engine/tranny as a unit then separate the tranny from the engine. Sounds like a lot of work, but it's a lot easier than trying to remove the engine out the front. Besides, you've got a welded in radiator mount to contend with. Reverse everything to put engine back in. A couple of 6 packs and a friend or two to help and you're done in 3 to 5 hours (depends on quality of friends mechanical abilities!)
