sorry been working and last night i was so tired i didnt even put computor onso iam answering the replys then its a short tv break for CSI then bed ,right to remove the half shafts you will need to remove the back brake drums and then look at the back plates ,now some vehicles have 4 bolts through the back plate that hold it on to the axle ,undo these four bolts as the back plate holds the half shaft bearing in ,i think your vehicle falls into this catagory but some american vehicles like the astro van need the diff taken apart via the back cover then the sun and planets taking out and a horseshoe type clip taking out ,anyway i sure your vehicle is like what a said .Honest i repair so many different types of motors that i get confused in my old age .Again sorry for the delay in answering i do most humbly applogise

  • jvarrington Sep 15, 2010

I REMOVED THE 4 BOLTS ON THE BACK PLATE BUT THE AXLE STILL ACTS LIKE IT HAS SOMETHING HOLDING IT IN MY MAINTENCE MANUAL SAYS TO UNDO THESE 4 BOLTS AND A SNAP RING i UNDID THE SAME BOLTS YOU AND THE MANUAL SAID TO BUT I DONT SEE THE SNAP RING IT TALKING ABOUT AND I DONT HAVE A BACK COVER ON MY DIFFERENTIAL TO BE ABLE TO LOOK IN THERE SO DO YOU KNOW WHAT SNAP RING IT IS TALKING ABOUT AND WHERE IT IS LOCATED.

snap ring i would assume is a circlip which would be in the end of the axle casing ,i would be inclined to disconnect the brake pipe and lift back plate out of the way but dont strip the brakes ,not necessary ,then look inside the axle casing for a circlip as their must be one if the manual says so although i cant say i ever remember doing one with a circlip inside the casing but ?? their is always a first time for everything ,right i have to go into alicante to take a cylinder head for skimming now siesta is finished and i though i had better have a look and check my replys

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. When the truck slows to a stop, and just as it stops, there is a very loud grinding noise that comes from the rear of the vehicle. I checked underneath and there is fluid...

The fluid splattered all over is most likely coming from the pinion seal. (The seal at the front of the differential where the driveshaft yoke goes in.) Normally, you would remove the driveshaft and the pinion yoke to relace the seal. The grinding however, leads me to believe that the seal leaking is a RESULT not a CAUSE of your problem. The way you describe it sounds like you may have some serious pinion and/or ring gear damage inside the differential.
If this is the case, there are severl ways to go about repairing this. You could tear your differential apart and replace the defective/damaged parts inside. You could replace your differential with a used one from a salvage yard. You could replace your differential with a remanufactured differential assembly.

To check for damage, remove the rear cover from the differential and check for metal in the oil and in the bottom of the housing. You can also turn the ring gear around and check for broken teeth. You can also inspect the spider gears and pinion gear for damage.

How to replace rear Axle seal on 4x4 chevy

this is very hard if you do not know what you are doing. Ill try to step you through this
  • pull wheels
  • drain pun-kin case
  • pull rear cover
  • in between the spider and axle sets pull C ring with needle nose pliers
  • pull hub and axle out CAREFULLY as there are roller bearings on the end of the axle housing
  • pull seal out at the end of axle housing
  • tap in new seal CAREFULLY and straight DO NOT BEND IT or it will be junk
  • replace axle carefully as the roller bearings are still there
  • replace C clip to original position
  • replace axle diff cover and replace the gasket with a new one
  • refill diff case
  • install tire
  • your good to go

Rear Seals Blown Out

The rear seal can be replaced but not without pulling the transmission, then you remove the seal holding case knock out-the seal and find the number on the seal and buy one and replace it and the gasket to the seal holder, also buy a speedy sleeve for the crank or you will find it leaking again.

How to replace bearing

There is a vacum switch in the transfercase on the drivers side. you can get to it with a wrench, but it will make you work for it. Part store is like $45.00 GM like $90.00, Same part.
Rear bearing. remove the differental cover and drain fluid. Remove the C Clip that hold the Axle in. Slide the Axle out and inspect to see if you need a new one. High mile axle has a worn grove where the bearings are and changing the bearing alone does nothing. You ight get away with a finding a bearing to match your axle if it's worn.
Remove the oil seal and then the bearing from the axle tube.
In-stall in revers, note use lots of lube on the seal and be careful not to nick the seal and bearing.
Fill differental with oil and run around the block, not hard and re-check the fluid. May want to go with syntetic oil or add lucus. Less maintance of oil changes to differental.
Good luck and hope this help.

Rear axle bearings

There are 4 bolts for each rear axle. They are located behind the rear brake drums. Remove e-brake cable from rear drum and take off brake line.(carefully). I recomend draining and changing your rear differential fluid too, because if the fluid by run out of axle housing. also you should replace the seals for the axles of if you are changing the bearings. When you are done don't forget to bleed your brakes, and hooking up e-brake cable. I hope this answers your question.
