I bought a new LS400 in Feb. 1990 and drove it for seven years. There never was any "failure" during that period, but the car had one very annoying characteristic: On hot, sunny days (over 90 deg. f), the air conditioning would pour out super cold air and never back off. You had to turn off or reposition the vents to keep the unpleasantly cold air from blowing on you, and the velocity of the air was way too high. Cranking up the temp set point did little until near upper limit.
Well, I bought a new 1999 LS400 in July 1999 and lo and behold, it does the exact same thing!! I thought for sure they would have learned how to design an air conditioning system over 10 model years. I've had a number of luxury GM cars over the past 35 years and none of them had a problem anything like this.
It seems that if you crank up the temp set point to the upper limit, then gradually drop it down while driving, if will give better control.
Lexus dealers feign total unfamiliarity with this "issue."
I'll bet someone on this message board knows what I'm talking about.
Many of the newer Lexus, 1995 and newer, have a sun sensor to compensate for the sun hitting on ones skin. This creates the perception of being hotter than one actually is. This is the most likely culprit for what you are experiencing. I can't speak to the older LS400 that exhibited this problem.

I've noticed a similar oddity in both my 92 ES 300 and my 2000 GS 300. If you have the air on at any temp and then turn it off, it still has that temp air coming out continually. You learn to deal with it, but it still is annoying at times. Not a thing you can do about it unfortunately. And if I were you I'd still take the Lexus over the GM however it's your choice. Hope this helps!

I own a 1992 Lexus ES 300. My front end has begun to shake intermittedly, especially when I hit a bump in the road. I assume the front end stabilization systems needs replacing. How complicated is the job, and how much would I save by doing it myself? Please advise.
