My 1991 Ranger has the same problem, the ABS Rear Antilock light stays on
constantly. Alot of people from
http://www.therangerstation.com forums have told
me that the problem has to do with the RABS Valve on the rear frame rail.
Although the rear brakes still work fine, the ABS is disabled if the RABS
valve is malfunctioning. It could also be the speed sensor in the rearend,
or the ABS module hidden under the dash of most trucks.
I have no idea what the cost of the RABS valve is, but removing it involves
removing 2 brake lines and a wiring harness. On older vehicles, chances
are, without heat being applied to the flange nuts, the lines will probably
twist off and the lines would have to be reflanged, which can be a pain in
the ass if you don't have a flange kit. I'd check the condition of your
brake lines and the price of the RABS valve before I went any further if I
were you.
