Assuming the vehicles antenna is intact and in one piece, check the antenna connection behind the radio. If the antenna is connected behind the radio, there could possibly be a problem with the radio's tuner (internally). The only way to properly diagnose this problem is to place a radio that is known to work into the vehicle (simply to test) and check the radio reception. If the radio reception is improved and working, you know the problem lies within the radio itself.
If it still does not work, there is a problem with the antenna on the vehicle (disconnected, damaged, cut, etc.)

radio's do fail if the radio and nothing ells is wrong you can replace the radio. buttons stopping working on the radio is a good sign there is a problem with the radio and nothing ells is wrong with the wiring. it may have over heated some time ago and has been working on borrowed time from the other components in the radio. now working with the engine running is down to there is more volts running into the radio with the engine running . no engine running it will have a steady 12v around. but with engine running it would be around 14v or just under. would replace radio one from same year as yours or same radio code type. hope this helps you
Dannielle, if the previous owner installed the radio, it must have worked. It is possible that error code may have no connection with the replaced radio which may work when connected to battery. It depends on the complexity of the new radio. If it is simple, s/b ok.
Check to see if you get power and ground at the radio. If you get power and ground then the radio may be faulty. Also if you get the radio out see if there is a fuse on the back of it and check it if there is one
