'87 Toyota Pickup Starting Problem

By maartenw - usenet poster

" "
I have an '87 Toyota 4x4 pickup that has an intermittent starting problem.
It has the 22R 4-banger engine. Ocassionally the starter will only "click"
when I try to start it. I push the clutch harder and sometimes that helps,
but not always. I also engaged the clutch over-ride switch and that didn't
seem to help. It usually works after several attempts.
If any Toyota owners have experience with this problem, I would appreciate
an e-mail to Ron at: http://

-   I have a 93 toyota pickup 22re that just started doing the same thing. Sometimes after I get it started it will hardly accelerate but when I turn the truck off and start it again it accelerates normal again.-   cassypersons

-   I had the same starting problem with my 2000 Tacoma.
One day it solved itself, but it was a frightening month not knowing if I might get stranded on some dark street at night in LA.
What I did:
Put the key in ignition. Turn key almost all the way forward (clockwise) as you normally would to start car, but stop just short of starting. Listen for the click.
Turn the key back (counter clockwise) to starting position. Leave key in.
Repeat two more times. On the next try, go ahead and turn the key all the way and hold it. Truck started for me every time! I know, sounds dumb. But I started my car like this for over a month. Then one day it just stopped clicking and always started up. Been good for 3 years.
Try it. Can't hurt. -   Guest

-   I have 1 1998 4-Runner with the same problem but for the first time I can't get it to start after several attempts. In addition the key was difficult to get out of the ignitiion. -   Guest

Have you tried replacing your starter?

I have an '86 4x4 SR5 that HAD that problem.

In the beginning it would only happen when it was cold outside. I think I was late for work 3 or 4 times. Later, it got worse. After work I would drive to the store, and after shopping it wouldn't start. I would have to sit in the parking lot, sometime up to an hour, but most times 20 to 40 minutes.

After I changed out my starter, it hasn't happened again.

But, of course now that I wrote this, it's gonna happen now...

Hey,
yes i have just recently been experiencing the excitement of walking out to the car in the morning ready for work, only to get into the 4by (22R 2dr 87 old chook) and its a struggle. Once the car starts and is left running for 20 secs, the next start within an hour is immediate... Any suggestions?

Hmm ... not sure I recall my 88 having a clutch switch (spoz i should check
before opening my mouth ... er keyboard) ... but your symptoms
kinda sound like the contacts in the solenoid. Haven't been in the Toy (yet?
155k) but my Subie was pretty easy to fix and about $2 for a replacement
contact which was almost burned away on one side. I spoz arcing does this but
don't know if you could put a condensor on there that would both help and
be affordable.

I have experienced the same problem! (I hate it! The possibility of
being "stuck" somewhere...) Additionally, the light on the override
switch comes on and stays lite even after starting (following "several
attempts"). The light goes off next time that I start it up (usually
running down the road following this experience...)

I BELIEVE my problem (and solution) is: The floor mat slips up and
interferes with the clutch petal action (the switch itself??).
Trimming my aftermarket floormat and being careful to assure that it
has not slipped upward, SEEMS to have cured this problem.

Good luck!

I had exactly the same problem last month with my 84 2wd pickup (160
kmiles, also a 22R, and no it doesn't have a clutch switch). It clicked
intermittently. The problem was the starter/solenoid (really the
solenoid, I imagine). A rebuilt starter cured it. FYI, don't ignore it.
I let it go a month or two, but what prompted me to immediate action was,
one day, instead of going "click", the starter engaged, remained engaged
after the engine started, and then remained engaged (and cranking) after I
immediately turned the engine off and removed the key from the ignition.
A little too much excitement for me.
