1999 Malibu - Fan Problem

By Powe33 - usenet poster

There are numerous postings in the archives that document a problem with the
fan not working on position 1 through 3. However, I have a slightly
different spin on this problem. My fan switch quick working on positions 1
through 3 at Christmas. Yesterday, it quit working on position number 4 and
there was a "click sound" and the smell of burnt electrical when it quit.

I am going to take a chance and change the fan motor resistor. I am just
curious if anyone else has ever blown position 4?

Provide the part number, etc. for the replacement resistor board (hopefully it has been beefed up from the original).

Ah, the sweet smell of burning carbon. Alas, better than the sound of
grinding bearings
Had the one to three, but not #4 malfunctioning. They're all part of a
resistor block; I'd
replace it first anyway. You've been here, right? :

Position #4 usually goes direct from the fuse block via a relay which
can go bad. Position 4 is the only one with no resistance in the line.

Interesting. Then #5 goes through a step-up transformer for the extra power?

Hmmmm, I thought there were only 4 settings? I'll have to pay
attention tonight when I go home, it's the highest setting that goes
direct through a relay, everything else goes through a varying degree of
resistance, with the amount decreasing for each one until the highest.

I followed the instructions at the attached link. The instructions are for
a 1997 Malibu. The 1999 Malibu must have had some changes with regards to
the plastic covers. There is only one cover to remove, and it is attached
by three, 7 mm screws.

I had a heck of a time getting the one bolt out that holds the resistor in
place. This is also a well documented issue. I thought I had a 1/4" swivel
in my tool set, but once I got started, I realized I only had a 3/8" swivel.
This swivel is too big and not very convenient. However, I did get it done,
and the fan now works on all 5 settings.

When I pulled the resistor out, only about 1/3 of the board came out.
Hopefully the other 2/3 of the board doesn't rattle it's way into somewhere
where it will cause trouble!
