Question about Toyota Pickup

3 Answers

Hi, I own a 3.0 d4d toyota fortuner (same engine as 3.0 d4d hilux) and as of yesterday it started belching white smoke. it starts and idles perfectly fine, the exhaust just smells off. not like unburnt fuel but more of a burning smell. i havnt ran it for more than a few minutes to avoid making any problems worse. we just changed the fuel filter today to make sure, as well as pumped it to make sure there was no water. we also recenlty changed fuel to a new "performance" diesel for turbos. would that have any bearing in this? thanks!

Can only be contaminated diesel (water, petrol).replace the fuel filter, purge the fuel lines (with a compressor), drain and rinse tank (that'd mean having to drop it completely) drain injector pump (remove all injector pipes from injectors and crank the motor til all diesel is removed. its a matter of purging the entire fuel system of old fuel and replacing with clean fuel. leaving out one step would mean contaminating your 'clean' new diesel.

White smoke on diesel engines, means water in combustion chamber. Blue smoke means oil.
In what condition was the filter you removed? How bad? Temperature issues? Missing coolant maybe? If yes, you might as well have an internal leak. Some gasket maybe. Check all you vital fluids levels. If anything missing, take the time to empty the engine oil on a can, and check the colour. If it will look like chocolate brown, then you do have a leak from the inside.

I'm Also having same problem, everytime I'm starting my fortuner it giving out a thick white smoke. Already send to toyota dealer for checking and repair. already change new injector, new fuel filter, clean the intake manifold and clean the EGR. A few days it works just fine, then after a few days the thick smoke back again. I'm already sending back in the car to the dealer twice this week for checking and repair, but still the white smoke belching out from the exhaust. Anyone have better suggestion and opinion ?

2008 Hilux 2.5 d4d, 2kd engine. Why does it belch blue smoke and shake a lot?

Blue smoke is indicative of burning oil, and the heavy shaking is showing that it's not firing properly on all cylinders. Check your oil levels and see if they have gotten low. Check your plugs and see if they are fouled or vaporized. It is likely you've got oil leaking into your cylinders, and that it is being burned during normal engine operation. If your plugs are fouled, replace them. If your plugs are fouled AND your oil is depleting, you're going to have to change out the gaskets in your engine, and I would also recommend you run fuel system / total engine cleaning and conditioning fluid (like SeaFoam) through your engine.

Sounds like you have a leaking head gasket maybe. Does the smoke have a sweet smell to it? If not it is oil or fuel.

Toyota hilux pick up D4D has a hard start in the morning but ok after the first start, kindly advise

Have a compression test done to determine the engine condition. With the hard start and oil usage it points to a worn rings and a lower compression pressure than is required.
