Yes it does. The ECU (computer brain) is located in the passenger compartment behind one of the side kick panels by the front seat, usually the passenger side. It is about the size of your high school English book and has a large mutil wire connector on it.
If you have the 302/5.0L, you will either have an electronic carburetor, called a 2VV in the manual, or a throttle body fuel injector, which will look llike a modified carburetor with a bunch of wires coming from it.
Almost all 351M/5.7L used the 2VV in 1985.
Another way to tell the 2VV is that there is a row of large calibration knobs on the fenderwall for adjustments.
The 2VV were primarily used on police cars and cars in Canada in the early 1985 production. later on, most 302/5.0L were built as "Central Fuel Injection," which is throttle body injection.

shows how backward we are in europe ,catalytic converters and the like didnt come in till 1992 ,so you have a mono point fuel injection system which if this is the case will have central processor ,sorry about this but i do get caught out quite often on here as i dont always think american but europeon in my answers .OBDII connectors were not compulsory till 2005 here in europe ,now these cars from 2005 onwards are so highly encrypted that i dare not plug my code reader in to certain models because it brings on the immobilisor as unauthorised access .

What is ecu?

A few Japanese car makers, maybe others too, use different terminology for the same system that today manages all vehicles, the computer controlled engine management system. The ECU -Electronic Control Unit- is the computer of the system, has a lot of sensors, and output switches and controls to run the engine under all operating conditions. Just like other makes, American cars for instance, call the computer the ECM - Electronic Control Module, or sometimes PCM- Powertrain Control Module. Different terminology, but all mean the engine computer. Now that computers are proliferating in vehicles- computers to run many different systems-the engine computer is considered the primary computer on the car. The ECU in your case.

Computer failure in 2000 impala ls

#1 If the starter relay is bypassed will the car start and run? Has the car enter anti-theft mode? a used computer can be installed and all computers need reprogram new/rebuilt/used. If car can start and run without relay then the "controlled wire " can be grounded without replacing computer if NO other issues exist.
#2 scan tool check for codes in the IPC system this is where anti-theft information is stored.

The computer for your car has a specific program for that car. You need to have the second computer flashed with your program, mileage and VIN number. It is extremely rare that a computer from another car, even the exact car, will work without the program being flashed.

There is not a computer reset button installed on the car anywhere you need to have a computer that connects to the ecu on the car (the cars computer) with the computer attached you can reset codes or reset the computer.

this is a weird fault but it sure does sound like a computer fault for sure since the computer controls everything about the car but before you change the computer, check for some basic normal problems that can also occur....for one thing, this fault can also be caused by bad grounds, if the grounds open up, the computer does not have a reference point to return its signals too so it goes haywire, believe me, something as simple as a ground problem can cause many weird effects where todays computer controlled cars are concerned....look for broken or loose or corroded wires or connections that are bolted onto the chassis of the car or engine block or body parts, make sure they have good connections, also follow any ground wires back to the computer and make sure they are good....if all wiring checks out ok, then I would suspect the computer...good luck
