Problem for Chevrolet 1987 V10

V10 vs Diesel

By Peter1 - usenet poster

Horsepower, torque, mileage, maintenance, and overall performance.
The truck would be used mainly for work pulling about 12,000 lbs a day
around town. I usualy put about 35,000 miles per year, and would have 4
wheel drive.
also need opinion on auto vs standard. I am getting rid of my 95 Ford
250hd before I have to put a 6th E4OD trans in it.
Thanks for your help.
P.S. beware of Richmond Ford Va

With the kind of miles you're going to be driving it sounds like you
should look at a diesel. Manual trans may be a good idea as some report short
life out of the auto (though mine has given good serviceknock on wood!).
Reports seem to vary as to the perfromance of the new 24V. I love my
older 12V though.
Pulling about 10,000 lbs through moderate hills I can consistently
average 14mpg. Don't think you'll even touch that with a V10.

Since mid-90's, the auto tranny as it comes from Chrysler has a few "weak"
spots programmed in at the factory - a good tranny shop should be able to
beef up your auto tranny to handle anything you can throw at it

Get the diesel, it'll pull its weight out of the mud (add some taller tires
to go with it)

Performance of 360 can be beefed up, also it's probably the best
all-around engine.

the three weak spots of the dodges are the Automatics( get a stick) air con
and the rear breaks..

On Sun, 13 Dec 1998 08:31:19 -0500 (EST), (James
Hayes) wrotc:

Go with a 2500/3500 Silverado with the 6.0 which achieves better gas
mileage than dodge could ever hope to get. Dodge doesn't stand behind
what they sell and they sure don't care about you after they get your
money. I just got rid of my 97 ram club cab with only 13,792 miles
because of that and more. It was a piece of crap, just like the
dealer and chrysler customer service. Understandably I wouldn't buy
another one so I bought a 99 silverado. Go to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov and
look at all of the tsb's on the dodge trucks and it will probably
quench some of your desire to own one. Good looks and good running
aren't the same thing and I'd be the first one to confess that the ram
looks great which is why I bought mine. If you still must have a ram
then avoid the mexican made ones, their vins begin with a 3.

I suggest you go to the GM newsgroup since you have nothing usefull to post
here. Have fun with your Chevy, grow up, and move on. I have had nothing
wrong with either of my trucks, whereas my Chevy was just as bad if not
worse than your Dodge.

Sorry Greg, but I've got to disagree with you here. I've owned several
trucks (Chevy, Ford, GMC, and Dodge) over the years, and my (Mexican-built)
Ram stands out as being the best-built, most reliable truck I've ever had.
(Granted, I only have about 20k on it right now, will have to wait on the
longest-lasting vote). It sounds to me like you were unlucky enought to by
a lemon, and then had to deal with a POS dealership.
I hope you have better luck with the Silverado.
