I have an intermittent problem with my A6. Sometimes when I start it up, the climate control is blank, the headlights stay off, and the temp guage says "---". Everything eles seems to work. If I turn the ignition off and on it comes back. Anyone have any ideas?
-   I have the same problem on my 1996 A6 2.8. I have to manually return the key to the right position or the starter moter just continues or half the electrics don't work (climate control, headlights, stop lights indicators) or I can't get out of Park. Sometimes in summer when it's hot I can't remove the key!! It's just a worn ignition switch and Audi charge too much labour to bother to replace it. -   daviduk99

If its like older models, the ignition switch gets worn and doesn't fully return to the 'run' position after starting. Try wiggling the switch slightly when this happens again. As I recall a new switch is under $100 from the dealer. ...

That's precisely what happened with my '96 A6, new ignition switch was correct prescription, but I also had another noisy symptom which was that with the key still in starting position the starter would grind/screech until I manually returned the ignition to the run position.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep my eye on it. You said $100 for a new switch? That sounds too cheap for anything from Audi. Is it a do it yourself thing? How much was labor? Thanks...

Well I dug out my records and believe it or not the switch was only $47.40 from Continental Audi (Naperville IL) about 16 months ago. It was for a '92 100. Now the bad news; 3 hrs. labor @ $90.00/hr to install. I do a lot of my own work but the lock has to come out of the steering column to get to the switch so I didn't want to muck it up.

Hey, there, Group. Am in the process of buying new car, good used A6 is a real possibility. Research reveals that Audi as well as VW (incl Passat!) get pretty poor marks from Consumer Reports vis a vis electrical system reliability.

My wife's '98 A6 Avant had the same problem. Had it into the dealer a few times before they figured it out. Turns out they have problems with the ignition switch in these cars. They replaced it and all the problems went away. Lucky for me it was still under the Audi Assured warrantee.
