Question about 2003 Mazda MPV

The radiator fans turn on whenever the engine turns on. The temperature reading on the thermometer goes up and down properly with the engine heating up and cooling down. Are the temperature sensor and the fan controller the most likely places for this problem?

If your AC is on this is operating correctly. When the AC is activated it over rides the fan control to run continuously to keep the motor from overheating. If the AC is not on and it is doing this something is sending a signal to the fan to run and most likely this is the Temp sensor or the ECM.

The cooloing fan comes on also whenever the a/c clutch engages, as well as when the temp hits about 200 degrees F

Temperature Warning Light is on Inspection Service How this system works: With the exception of older, air-cooled vehicles, cars rely on a liquid called coolant (or antifreeze) to keep the engine at an optimal temperature. Coolant is a mixture of water and ethylene glycol, and it circulates around the engine block and absorbs excess heat, which keeps the engine from overheating. The coolant converts that heat to air in the radiator, and then the air is emitted, at which time the coolant is ready to absorb more heat. Without coolant, the engine would quickly ruin itself with its own heat production. Common reasons for this to happen:
  • Coolant is low or weak: The most common culprit when an engine overheats is low or weak coolant. If your car doesn't have enough coolant, then it can't absorb enough heat. While your car will naturally lose small amounts of coolant over the years, a leak is the most likely cause of low coolant levels.The proper ratio of coolant to water can also get distorted, resulting in a problem. Too little or even too much antifreeze can dramatically lower the boiling point of the coolant. A proper ratio of antifreeze to water is 50/50 to 60/40, depending on the vehicle.
  • Broken radiator fan shroud: The radiator fan shroud directs the airflow across the radiator so the air can absorb the coolant's heat. When the fan shroud breaks or becomes dislodged, air fails to enter the radiator, and the coolant will no longer have a place to direct the transfer of heat.
  • Broken or missing air dam: Along with the shroud, some vehicles have an air dam (or deflector) underneath the vehicle. If this is broken or missing then the air can pass underneath the vehicle but not also through the radiator, which will cause overheating. These air dams are essential in newer vehicles, as they force the air through the fan shroud.
  • Faulty coolant temperature sensor: The temperature sensor takes constant readings of the coolant temperature and sends that information to the engine control unit. Based on the temperature of the coolant, the engine control unit adjusts the ignition timing, the fuel injector pulse, and the operation of the electric cooling fan.
  • Bad water pump: The water pump is responsible for keeping the coolant cycling throughout the engine. After the coolant transfers its heat energy to the air, the water pump recirculates it around the engine so that it can absorb more heat. The most common water pump problems are a leaking pump, bad bearings, or an impeller that has rotted away due to a low coolant ratio.
  • Stuck thermostat: The thermostat acts as a dam for the coolant. When the engine first turns on, and it is still cold, the thermostat keeps the coolant from circulating, which allows the engine to warm up as quickly as possible. Once the engine has reached its operating temperature, the thermostat opens and allows the coolant to circulate. A stuck thermometer may stay permanently sealed and therefore keep the coolant from reaching the engine block.
  • The thermostat may also stick open. This will not usually result in overheating, but it will waste gas.
  • Broken engine cooling fan: The engine has a cooling fan that is deployed when the coolant needs some extra help. When the coolant temperature sensor notices that the coolant temperature is getting too high, the engine control unit (on newer vehicles) will initiate the cooling fan to reduce the temperature.
  • Broken thermostatic fan clutch: Older vehicles use a thermostatic fan clutch to engage the engine cooling fan, which is mounted to the fan blades. The fan clutch uses a bi-metallic spring that tightens when the temperature increases. This acts as a "high speed" option for the fan, and when engaged, it draws more air across the radiator.
  • Blown head gasket: The head gaskets sit between the engine block and the cylinder heads, and keep coolant from entering the engine's oil and combustion chamber. When a gasket blows and coolant seeps in, the issue is not only that the engine will overheat, but also that damage may be done to the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors due to contamination from the coolant. What to expect: A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the cause of the temperature warning light turning on and the source of the overheating, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs. How important is this service? An overheating engine is extremely dangerous. It is not safe to drive a vehicle with an overheating engine, or you may ruin the engine completely and put yourself at risk. As soon as you notice the light come on, pull over. If there is no place to safely pull over, turn off your radio and other electrical units, and turn your heat on high (this will funnel some of the hot engine air into the cabin). As soon as you can safely pull over, do so, and then book one of our mechanics to perform an inspection.

How do I solve overheating?


First, find the problem.
When the engine is running, whenever it reaches the temperature of the thermostat, that thermostat is supposed to open, allowing the hot coolant to flow to the radiator, to maintain proper engine temperature.
The thermostat could be stuck closed, needing replacement.
Whenever the engine gets warm, there is also an electric fan in front of the radiator, to cool the hot coolant in the radiator.
This fan works off a sensor that is ******* into the engine block (whose function is to read the engine temperature) and sends an electric signal to the electric fan to start when needed.
The sensor could be bad, the fan motor could be bad, and there is a relay in the system that could be bad also.

Why is my 2001 cadillac running hot?


With the thermostat out you should see a lot of circulation. If not investigate water pump. Is the fan electric fan working? Bypass the relay and run the fan whenever the engine is running. If it doesn't overheat with the fan running then investigate fan control. make sure the coolant is topped off and use a thermometer in the radiator to verify temperature.

Compressor Clutch disengages and Radiator Fan starts to run loudly


The radiator fan should turn on when the a/c clutch engages as this is designed to increase the cooling of the engine as the a/c increases the engine loading. But the compressor clutch should stay engaged as long as there is need for cooling, and disengage/re-engage as the temperature control calls for cool air. The radiator fan will shut off IF the engine temperature is cool enough to do so, as it is regulated by heat, as well as the A/c override.

If your air conditioning is not cooling the car and the clutch is simply disengaging prematurely, have the temperature control and relay checked for proper operation. Also have the refrigerant level checked to assure there is adequate refrigerant in the system and no leaks. My first bet would be the relay or the thermostatic temperature control under the dash.

Turning on the heat removes heat from the engine as it blows it on you. Make sure first that there are no air pockets in your cooling system as that can cause high temp reading and malfunctions in proper fan engagement. If that looks good test your fan, if it is working then test the fan relay, if it is working test the temperature sensor that gives the relay the go ahead to engage the fan.

Hyundai Elantra temperature goes up to HI when air is turned on


There is an electric fan that should come on with the AC and run whenever the AC is on,if it doesn't come on it will heat up very quickly. Sounds like a problem with that radiator mounted fan.
The fan is supposed to come on when the engine gets hot enough also.
If so, the AC should be ok at hiway speeds.But you need the fan to work.

After i turn off engine it sounds like boiling water but temp gauge reads cool and no water leaks out


I would recommend checking the coolant level in the radiator while the engine is cool. If the coolant level is low, the temperature gauge will not function properly and can read cool even though the engine is actually overheating. The cooling system should be checked for proper operation using a scan tool and an infrared thermometer to verify that:

1. The thermostat is opening at the correct temperature
2. The coolant is flowing through the radiator correctly
3. The engine coolant temperature sensor is providing accurate data to the engine control module.
4. The electric radiator cooling fans are turning on at the correct temperature

If there are any problems found by checking the 4 items listed above, further diagnosis may be needed to locate the actual CAUSE of the problem.

My car seems to be over heating. The meter goes all the way up after Ive been driving and I come to a stop, but once I start the car moving again the meter goes back down. What do you think the problem is?


If the car is running hot only at low speed or stop and go traffic but cools down when you are on the highway........Probably going to be something wrong with the electric fan mounted to cool the radiator. When you are on the highway the force of the air is enough to keep the radiator cool but in traffic you really need that fan.

My 94 Tracer temperature gauge reads between 3/4 and 7/8 in the normal range before the radiator fan turns on. I have already replaced the fan temperature switch and the relay. Could my temperature...


Yes, it is possible the temp. sender is faulty, but I would do a cross check of the actual coolant temperature vs gauge reading using a cooking thermometer in the top of the radiator.
Take care not to get scalded - check it at about 180 to 200 deg.

My sc1 over heats when at idle and only if ac or heat is turned off as soon as i turn onn ac heat drops imediately


you may want to check on the radiator fan. The AC has its own fan and once AC is on, the fan would help bring down the temperature. It is either the fan is not blowing or has become weak. You can check on the fan by pulling out the temp sensor on the lower radiator hose. The fan should blow at full speed when doing this.

Check on the water reserve the water inside it goes down, if not there may be a leak somewhere. Water vapor may be escaping and lessening the effectiveness of the cooling system. This may be a reason why the engine cools down after the AC fan is on.
