Steering column noise

By Odud - usenet poster

" "
I hear a very slight rattle in the steering column on my 2002 Tahoe when on
uneven road surfaces. At first I thought maybe a steering component was bad
but its hard to reproduce. It has 24K miles and I just bought it. I also
have an expedition that doesnt do this. I must say the tahoe is more refined
than the ford but I like them both for different reasons. Anyhow, is this
steering column noise a known issue?

Same Problem

May 04, 2009

-   I have the same steering column clunk in my 2003 Silverado 1500. I can't tell where in the column the problem is located. I know that I need to grease the area. Does anyone know where I can get a a diagram of the column? I have the Haines manual. It is not illustrated there.

clunking noise is in steering slip joint. Had noise since 5000 miles. Haven't fixed problem yet. Considering borgeson replacement steering shaft or drilling hole in shaft and threading in a grease zert so I can grease this. My father and I farm and own 2 ford f250's, 1 ford f350, one 08 2500hd ltz , so we know trucks. It pisses me off that I feel like I have to fix this myself. GM is not going to do it for you, eventhough the part is weak defective and could affect the safety of your steering in the future.. There is no excuse to have play or slopp in the steering shaft in the 21century . Cheap product and engineering.

-   I just replaced the stock steering shaft with a Borgeson, approx. $250. The new one is BUILT, now that I have changed the original and have it out I can see what the problem is. The grease moves out of the slide area and the noise starts. It would appear that the dealers just loosen the outer bolt, slide the shaft in and out a few times to redistribute the grease. I was sick of the noise, and sicker of the dealer's poor repair. The replacement part was way worth it to me, hopefully this makes it permanently quiet. I did the job myself in about an hour.

I worked at a local chevy dealer and came across this problem quite often, it is a flaw on GM's part. however in 2007 GM released a new part to replace the old shaft and solve the problem of constantly having to relube the shaft. you can purchase this part at your local dealer, or you can have them install it, i recommend letting them do it, because i have seen many people let their steering wheel spin while attempting it and ruin their clock spring for the air bag. i saw a few people have purchased aftermarket shafts for like $250, i would always recommend going factory, especially in this matter because the new shaft is only about $130 and installing it shouldn't be more than half an hour or about $40, and the part comes with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty including labor, at any GM dealer across the nation.

Finally was able to find out that the rattle you describe is a bearing at the bottom of the steering column. A buddy of mine and I have both been pursuing a fix. He tells me the Chev dealership finally fixed his by replacing a bearing at the bottom of the steering column. Said they had to remove the intermediate shift and then replace the bearing which is around the shaft at the bottom of the column. Additionally, there is a clunking noise that can be repaired by replacing the intermediate shaft,

Condition
Some customers may comment on a clunk-type noise coming from under the hood that also can be felt in the steering wheel. These conditions may be more noticeable when turning at low speeds on rough road surfaces.
Diagnostic Tips
Use the information below to help diagnose the source of the noise.
• Frame Snap and/or Popping Type Noise -- A frame snap or popping type noise can be duplicated on rough or smooth road surfaces with steering wheel input to the left or the right. This type of noise can be HEARD and is typically louder with the windows rolled down. For additional information, refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-61-002F or newer -- Snap/Popping Type Noise Coming from Front of Vehicle (Remove Front Crossmember, Change Fastener Orientation).
• Intermediate Shaft Clunk -- Intermediate shaft clunk is heard and FELT in the steering wheel and/or steering column area, typically while driving on rough road surfaces with steering wheel input.
Correction:
Replace the I-Shaft with P/N 19153614.
Do NOT lubricate or exercise the I-Shaft.

Important:
• I-shaft P/N 19155614 has been designed to replace previous designed dampened and non-dampened I-shafts. The physical difference in the yoke size will accommodate all vehicles listed in this bulletin.
• Due to the design of the new I-shaft, it is not possible to lubricate/grease the I-shaft.

I just consulted with a GM mechanic that I have known for a long time and he informed me that GM has come out with a 2nd generation I-shaft for these Chevy's. I own a 04 Chevy Avalanche and my friend has an 04 Serria both with the same issue. My machanic stated that the 2nd generation shaft eliminates this issue as it does not have the grease in the componate. Price runs around $225cnd. I have been searching the net for a part dealer in the US that has this part. Just changed an O2 sensor from the States at a fraction of the price for the same part, same manufacturer so I would imagine that this 2nd generation I-shaft would be concerderable cheaper as well.

I regreased my steering shaft several times and the rattling always came back. The last time I cleaned the intermediate steering shaft out with gas and cleaned it out with a clean rag. Then I filled it with Liquid Nails sealant ( it's like a silcone ) You have to have the plug that comes with the grease kit to force the sealant all the way down the shaft. I have not had a problem with it since.
