Question about 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

2 Answers

Why does the service engine, trac off and abs lights come on when I hit a bump, on a 2004 pontiac grand am. I found out I needed front brakes (inside) so replaced the front brakes (rotors were fine). The lights used to go off after I turned off the car and back on again, but now they stay on all the time, even after my new brake job.

Shops are reporting huge failure rates on ABS sensors in some late model GM vehicles where the ABS sensor is integrated with the wheel bearing/hub. These sensors are in two styles. One style bolts the sensor directly on the wheel bearing. The sensor counts the notches on the ABS tone ring inside the wheel bearing. The clearance between the sensor and the tone ring is critical. The problem occurs when rust builds up between the sensor and the wheel bearing. This phenomenon is called "rust jacking," where the rust literally pushes the sensor upwards, increasing the gap between the sensor and the tone ring to the point where it reads intermittently. If you have this style sensor, remove it and lightly sand the rust (lightly being the key word). Then apply a light coat of marine grease on the bare metal and re-assemble. You may want to try applying a thin bead of RTV silicone around the outer edge to prevent water from getting under the sensor.
The second and more common style has the ABS sensor built into the bearing/hub. This unit CANNOT be serviced. You must replace the entire bearing/hub.

The service engine light does not affect the abs.You most likely have a broken wire in your abs system which is affected by suspension movement.A code reader which does abs codes will tell you which wheel circuit is turning on the abs light. When there is no abs available the track will turn off.

Abs light and brake light are on. also service

You can test the wheel speed sensors by unhooking the connectors and put ohmeter test leads on the sensor terminals should read around 1100-1600 ohms also the connectors themselves were bad for wires breaking inside the insulation at the connectors from flexing when the wheel is turned back and forth..Note excessive wheel bearing noise from bad bearings have also been known for interferring with clean abs signal also causing abs codes good luck

Those lights are for a wheel bearing i have done the job myself but if youre gonna replace 1 you might as well do both of the front wheel bearings and the lights disappear. wheel bearings run 70 a piece.

ABS, brake, trac control, service engine soon light came.

I'm sorry to say that you will need to see a dealer or repair shop so they scan your ABS for trouble codes first and then find your problem.

"...should not have to have to deal with these issues"

Agreed! But, there seems to be a glitch involving the ABS and TRAC system. On my 99 GAGT, when the eng and tranny are cold, I tend to get an ABS fail during turn/brake instances. If I restart the engine, it generally goes away. I've done a bit of research and have found nothing that fives a definitive answer to this. If you take it to the dealer, it will cost an arm and a leg for the troubleshooting alone. I'd recommend driving it as is provided you can get the ABS to reset by restarting the engine.
Sorry I can't provide any better solution...
