Question about Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I have a 1995 volkswagen passat car with a vr6 engine. i installed a used engine into car and now i cannot get car to start. the car will turn over but will not fire up. i have checked the fuses and all are good. i installed a new fuel pump and i checked it before i installed it and it works great when i hooked it up directly to a 12 volt battery. but when i hook the car hook ups to it the pump would not function. i checked the fuel pump relay and it open and closed like it was suppose to. so the fuel pump will not operate when hooked up to car, but the car will not start even when i hooked up pump directly to 12 volt battery and tried starting the car that way. the pump operated and flowed fuel to injectors but car would not fire up. i also purchased a new ignition switch for car. i have noticed that the odometer and digital clock will display on and will stay on even when i turn the car switch off and take out the key, is this normal? and i know normally on cars when you turn key to the on position or try to start car the dash instrument cluster is suppose to light up with the oil, temp, altinater, check engine light is suppose to light up. but mine does not. it has no instrument lights that will light up at all, nothing but the odometer, and clock. i have no idea what is wrong with car and why it is no power getting to parts or engine. is there a relay i should check, or something else i need to look at?

i have checked all my connections on the electrical system and everything is correct. i got to thinking about why there is no power and why dask cluster will not show power to check engine, battery, altinator, oil and so on. i pulled the ECM power relay out and i checked it by hooking the #86 and #85 relay terminals up to a 12 volt battery to see if it would open and close it did not click or anything. then i hooked up my multimeter to the relay terminals #87 and #30 to see if meter would display a rading and it did not move any. just to be sure i was doing correctly i done the same with my fuel pump relay and it clicked and meter functioned correctly. so i believe that the ECM power relay is bad. do you believe this can be the problem? i ordered a new relay an i am waiting for it to arrive. i would have changed out one of my other relays in the car but the volkswagen relays all have different terminal locations on them so you cannot interchange them. let me know what you think about the ECM.

It seems like the wire harness to the engine management system is unplugged check your connections, and just in case, I am sending some diagrams, pick the ones for your vehicle and follow the wriing to find your loose connection.

1995 volkswagen passat vr6 wont start the injectors are getting fuel but its not getting fuel to the engine. The injectors are getting spark and the fuel pressure is good.

if it fires then dies, you have to reset the alarm system with the key/remotes???otherwise you need to plug in the diagnostic computer(saves hours of "fun")

1996 VW Passat VR6 is overheating, upper hose is hot, lower hose is cool, fluid is not leaking out. What do you recommend?

Thermostat is most likely. Try that first, then my next choice would be water pump. Good luck.

No heat

Look under the dash to see if the controller flaps are working(Unsure if u have auto or manual cable adjustment) move the hot to cold lever or press the button if electric as the old cable systems do break. Is the thermostat okay, look if the heater radiator core is okay, do you get a mist on the windscreen and sweet small?this can be done by removing the panels on either side oth the gearbox tunnel(footwell area) then use a torchlight to check. Some engine models have a 2 way valve in the engine bay/firewall area connected to the radiator that can rust or sieze and stop heatflow to the inner heater radiator.follow the radiator pipes going from the engine to the firewall to find it.

95 passat vr6 giving problems

Adjust or replace the shiftlock sensor. It unlocks the shifting mechanism when you put your foot on the brake.

If there is an ignition problem, the tumbler will need replacement soon. This can be caused by an overloaded keychain. Best to do it now while it still is working, then have it fail and leave you stranded.

Thermostat for vw passat 1995 vr6

I have found the thermostat- it is located at the right end of the engine block- up high- follow the radiator hose from the radiator to the engine- the thermostat is right there. There are 3 allen-head screws (5mm hex) that attach the thermostat cover to the thermostat housing. The issue I am having is that I can't reach on of the screws. I need help.
