The large vaccum line just behind the EGR valve has popped off. Your HVAC controls works off of the vaccum block.

1986 Pontiac Perisianne, AC mostly blows out of the defrost vents. At time I can start the car with the switch in high a/c. It begins with blowing out of the dash vents but then moves by it self to the...

Not sure about this old a car, but probably the mode valve actuator on the HVAC box under the dash. Actuators like this send a signal back to the HVAC controls to indicate the position of the valve. If the feedback signal is faulty, the actuator will move to a default position (which is probably defrost).

Changed battery and now the A/C won't blow out dash vents.

You need to have the HVAC reset itself. Turn off all HVAC function and set all switches to CCW position, disconnect battery for about 10 minutes. Reconnect battery and do not touch any HVAC controls for several minutes, the system will go through a calibration sequence.

I have a 2003 cherokee laredo that keeps blowing air out of the defroster vents. Occasionally it goes back to the fron vents, but soon switches back to defrosters. The air is cold, so no problem with that.

If you have a manual control , you may a a vaccum leak at the firewall under the hood. when you give it gas and the vents go from the floor to defrost . listen for hissing, and cracked / broken vaccum lines

AC/heat doesn't come out front vents. Can hear

try a vaccum leak under the hood. Look and listen for any little sounds of air blowing out. Also the door switch may not be turning to vent it may be stuck on one side, like defrost!

Air will not blow out the vents

Sounds like the hvac doors are not moving when the dial is switched. These are usualy vaccum operated and the switch is under the dash behind the glove compartment. You probably need a service manual to know which lines run the door that controls where the air comes out, but you might only have a vaccum line pulled loose.
