Question about 1995 Ford Probe

1995 ford probe gt 2.5l V6, was running at 45 mph, then the car died, after that it has a rough idle, I can't give it more then 25%gas pedal or it starts to spit and sputter. I replaced cap, rotor, wires, plugs, front o2 sensor, and crank position sensor. help?

    Is the check engine light on? If not,

    It's possible your timing belt has slipped a tooth. Do you have overhead cams? If yes, maybe you can get the cover off the cam sprockets to check the valve timing. If you want to try that, I can lookup the timing marks--lemme know

    the check engine light comes on intermittently, I don't have an obd 1 reader though, so I can't check that out. But it has been on and off for a few years now.. it's a common thing with probes. It has over head cams yes, 4 to be exact. it is the 2.5L v6 KL03 engine.

    Yes the check engine light is on, however it has been coming on and off over the last few years.. A common problem that I have seen in these cars many times. It has 4 overhead cams, it's the 2.5L V6 KL03 engine.

OK, and now it looks like coachjoehutc is thinking the same as me. When I look up your car, it takes me to the Mazda Millenia engine--does that sound right? It only shows 2 cam sprockets, but maybe there's a gear in the head to turn the other cam? Anyway, I'm pasting a picture of the marks. There's a little tang coming off the head that marks the timing. Now unfortunately it appears the timing covers are the one-piece type that stretch all the way down (I was hoping there would be a section on the top you could remove to see the gears). I hate for you to have to take the whole front off and find out I'm wrong, so maybe you can just remove the upper cover screws and, if the cover is plastic, it may let you bend it out far enough to see those marks on the gears (????). If so, then rotate the engine to TDC for #1 (there is an ignition timing tab to use for that around the one o'clock position). Look for the marks on the gears--if I'm right, they will only be off the tangs by a tooth (any more and the engine wouldn't run). If you don't see the dots on the gears, you're on the exhaust stroke and need to turn the engine another 360. Is this all making sense? Let me know if you have questions.

yes, the o2 sensors send signals to the ecm, that controls the fuel pressure, distributor advance, etc.

I have a 2006 ford mustang gt with the 4.6. when you start the car it will die every time. but if you start it and give it gas it will run till you let off the pedal then it will die again. it dies every...


have it scanned for codes--probly throttle sensor or idle air control is the issue--the area cud be dirty--may also be service bullitins on that model

Ford probe idle fluctuating


Sounds like you have bad gas. It can get strong mix of gas to give you the right idle, but when it has water mix, it will cause the car to fire like it should. This will then give you a low, rough, or just cutting off idle. Try mixing water remover in with the gas. You may have to drain the gas out or just drive it like it is until the tank is almost empty. Fill up with gas (from a different store) and you may want to change the plugs after the good gas is through the system. I'm not saying the plugs are bad, but there may be a lot of moisture beads from the water sitting causing rust.

Sounds like you need your timing fixed and idle re-adjusted. Also check your fuel filter just in case.

Engines idles rough and shuts off


  1. Answer: The engine noise, it is impossible for us to help you here without listening to the engine ourselves. As for your idling problem, check all the vacuum hoses and intake manifold gaskets as you might have a slight vacuum leak somewhere. In addition, check the idle speed control motor to make sure it is operating properly. If all checks out okay, scan the computer for fault codes. Scan the computer for fault codes. Also, check the oxygen sensor and coolant sensors and also Check your EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve it sounds like it is stuck open and needs replacing
