Question about 2001 Nissan Altima

Just changed the rear brakes on my altima, pulled the star nut in as much as possible, still can't get hub back on..Help!

Bleed the brake fluid a little, until the brake liners retract a tad more. After installing the wheels, hard braking in reverse will adjust the rear brakes just fine.

2001 altima replacing rear wheel stud


strip it down to your hub the hub holds the studs .it is a push pull fit .but an old nut on it.then hit the top of it .it when then push in.remove the nut. push in the new stud from the rear of the hub.put a larger nut on top of stud ,then your wheel nut to pull the stud into the hub.then remove the wheel nut .then refit the parts taken off.and fit your wheel.

    Before raising the rear of your Honda, remove the dust cup from the center of the brake drums using a hammer and chisel. This will give you access to the spindle nut, which you can loosen using an axle nut socket. Then you can raise and remove the wheel/tire assembly ,or assemblies if you are replacing the bearings on both wheels.

    If your Honda model is equipped with rear disc brakes, remove the brake disc retaining screws, the brake hose bracket from the steering knuckle and caliper bracket mounting bolts. Hang the caliper to the coil spring using wire. Do not let the caliper hang free or the brake hose may be damaged.

    At this point, you will be able to remove the brake disc by hand. However, rust may have a firm grip on the disc. If this is the case, use a couple of 8-by-1.25 mm bolts and screw them evenly into the brake disc threaded holes. This will push the disc off the hub. Now you can finish removing the spindle nut and hub/wheel bearing assembly and install the new hub/wheel bearing assembly using a new spindle nut

    If your Honda Civic comes equipped with rear brake drums, remove the center grease cup and loosen the axle spindle nut using an axle nut socket. After raising and removing the wheel/tire assembly, finish removing the axle nut and washer.

    You might be able to remove the outer wheel bearing from the spindle using a screwdriver. If not, wiggle the brake drum as you pull on it to let the bearing fall off the spindle. However, the brake drum might be caught in place by the brake shoes. In this case, you can retract the brake shoes through the hole in the back of the backing plate.

    Remove the rubber plug from the back of the backing plate. Then rotate the star wheel on the adjusting screw using a brake adjusting tool as you push the lever off the start wheel with a screwdriver. With the brake shoes off the brake drum, pull the brake drum off the wheel assembly. Then clean the brake assembly with brake parts cleaner and a clean, lint-free towel.

    Now you can set the brake drum on a workbench or hard surface and remove the grease seal and inner wheel bearing. The inner and outer wheel-bearing races can be removed using a drift punch and hammer. Pack the new wheel bearings with high-temperature wheel-bearing grease using a wheel-bearing packer and use a new grease seal during installation. Also, before reinstalling the brake drum, apply a thick coat of wheel-bearing grease to the cavity inside the hub, but do not fill it completely.

How do I get the rear spindle off so I can replace the emergency brake shoes on my 2006 chrysler pacifica?



Adjustment

  1. Place parking brake lever in -full released- position.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Remove plug in parking brake shoe support to access adjuster star-wheel.
  4. Through the access hole, rotate the adjuster star wheel in the following direction to expand the shoes outward against the drum:
    1. Left brake - Rotate star-wheel toward rear of vehicle.
    2. Right brake - Rotate star-wheel toward front of vehicle.
  5. Using an appropriate tool, turn adjuster star wheel until wheel will not rotate (dead lock).
  6. Back off adjuster six detents (teeth).
  7. Rotate wheel, checking for light drag. If drag is too heavy, continue to back off adjuster one detent at a time until light drag is present. Do not back off star-wheel more than 17 detents from wheel lock.
  8. Install access plug.
  9. Adjust opposite wheel parking brake shoes using same method.
  10. Lower vehicle.
  11. Apply and release parking brake lever once to ensure proper operation of parking brakes.


Removal & Installation NOTE The following procedure may be used to remove shoes on either side of the vehicle.

  1. Lock out automatic adjuster in parking brake lever.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Access and remove rear hub and bearing.
  4. Remove parking brake cable bolt at knuckle.
  5. Completely back off parking brake shoe adjustment.
  6. Remove parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  7. Remove shoe adjuster.
  8. Remove upper brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.
  9. Remove lower brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.
  10. Remove upper and lower shoes with return spring from shoe actuator.
  11. Remove return spring from shoes.

To install:
  1. Install return spring between upper and lower shoes.
    NOTE Before installing shoes on actuator, make sure actuator hooked to rear cable is positioned with word -UP- facing outward.
  2. Install upper and lower shoes with return spring on shoe actuator located on parking brake cable.
  3. Install lower brake shoe hold-down pin through rear of support and lower shoe, then install hold-down clip.
  4. Install upper brake shoe hold-down pin through rear of support and upper shoe, then install hold-down clip.
  5. Install shoe adjuster. Place end of adjuster with star wheel upward.
  6. Install parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  7. Install bolt securing parking brake cable to knuckle and tighten bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  8. Using Brake Shoe Gauge, Special Tool C-3919, or equivalent, measure inside diameter of parking brake drum portion of rotor.
  9. Place Gauge over parking brake shoes at widest point.
  10. Using adjuster star wheel, adjust parking brake shoes until linings on both park brake shoes just touch jaws on gauge. This will give a good preliminary adjustment of parking brake shoes, before a final adjustment is made at end of this procedure.
  11. Install hub and bearing with wheel speed sensor as well as all components necessary to access it.
  12. Lower vehicle.
  13. Unlock automatic adjuster in parking brake lever.
  14. Perform final adjustment of parking brake shoes

  15. Adjustment This vehicle is equipped with permanently sealed rear wheel bearings. There is no periodic lubrication or maintenance recommended for these units.


    Removal & Installation

    1. Raise and support vehicle.
    2. Remove wheel mounting nuts, then tire and wheel assembly.
    3. If equipped with AWD:
      1. Remove cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from half shaft.
      2. While a helper applies brakes to keep hub from turning, remove hub nut and washer.
    4. Remove brake caliper and rotor from hub and bearing assembly.

    5. Disconnect vehicle wiring harness connector at wheel speed sensor connector.
    6. Unclip wheel speed sensor connector from spare tire mounting support.
    7. Disconnect two sensor cable routing clips on rear suspension crossmember.
    8. Disconnect two sensor cable routing clips along toe link.
    9. Disconnect sensor cable from bracket on brake support.

    10. Completely loosen, but do not remove four bolts fastening hub and bearing in place. Once loosened from threads in hub and bearing, push bolts up against rear of hub and bearing to keep brake support plate in place when hub and bearing is removed.

    11. Pull hub and bearing off knuckle and half shaft (if equipped with AWD), then thread wheel speed sensor cable through hole in brake support plate as it is removed with hub and bearing.

    To install:
    1. Position hub and bearing bolts though rear of knuckle and parking brake support just enough to hold support in place as hub and bearing is installed.
    2. Install hub and bearing by first feeding end of wheel speed sensor cable through hole in bottom of parking brake support. As this is being done, if equipped with AWD, slide hub and bearing onto half shaft. Place hub and bearing through brake support, onto knuckle, lining up mounting bolt holes with bolts and placing wheel speed sensor head at bottom.
    3. Install four bolts fastening hub and bearing in place. Tighten mounting bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
    4. Place wheel speed sensor cable routing grommet into bracket on parking brake support.
    5. Route wheel speed sensor cable along toe link and rear suspension crossmember connecting routing clips where shown.
    1. Connect vehicle wiring harness to wheel speed sensor connector.
    2. Install brake rotor and caliper.
    3. If equipped with AWD:
      1. Install washer and hub nut on end of half shaft.
      2. While a helper applies brakes to keep hub from turning, tighten hub nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
      3. Install spring washer, nut lock and cotter pin on end of half shaft.
    4. Install tire and wheel assembly. Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).

The rear drum wont come off as i would expect

Brake linings contain asbestos. Asbestos is a known cancer-causing agent. When working on brakes, remember that the dust which accumulates on the brake parts and/or in the drum contains asbestos. Always wear a protective face covering, such as a painter's mask, when working on the brakes. NEVER blow the dust from the brakes or drum.
  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. On vehicles without rear bearing hub, remove the dust cap, cotter pin, nut lock, wheel bearing nut and washer from the spindle. Remove the outer wheel bearing. Remove the drum with the inner wheel bearing from the spindle. If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes. Remove the grease seal.
  4. If equipped with a rear bearing hub, remove the drum by removing the retainer screws from the drum and pulling the drum from the hub assembly. If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes. To install:
  5. On vehicles equipped without rear bearing hub, lubricate and install the inner wheel bearing. Install a new grease seal. Install the drum to the spindle. Lubricate and install the outer wheel bearing, washer and nut. Adjust the bearing preload following the procedure outlined in the "Rear Wheel Bearing'' of this section. When the bearing preload is properly set, install the nut lock and a new cotter pin. Install the grease cap.
  6. On vehicles with rear bearing hub, install the brake drum to the hub assembly and install the retaining screws.
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Adjust the rear brakes as required.
  8. Apply the brakes until a firm pedal is obtained, prior to moving the vehicle.

How to remove a rear hub assembly bearing on a 99 honda accord 4 cly 2.3.

The rear wheel bearing and hub unit are replaced as a unit.
  1. With the vehicle on the ground, loosen the spindle nut.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4. Remove the brake disc retaining screws.
  5. Unbolt the brake hose brackets from the knuckle.
  6. Remove the caliper bracket mounting bolts and hang the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire.
  7. Remove the brake disc. If the disc is frozen on the hub, screw two 8 x 1.25mm bolts evenly into the disc to push it away from the hub.
  8. Remove the spindle nut and pull the hub unit off of the spindle.

Clean the backing plate and the mating surfaces of the brake disc and hub with brake cleaner. Clean the spindle, washer, and hub with solvent.
To install:
  1. Inspect the hub unit for signs of damage or wear. If the bearings are worn, the entire unit must be replaced.
  2. Install the hub unit and spindle washer onto the spindle. Install the spindle nut but do not tighten it.
  3. Install the brake disc and tighten the retaining screws to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Install the brake caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Install the brake hose brackets onto the knuckle and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  5. Install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
  6. With the vehicle on the ground, tighten the new spindle nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm), then stake the nut with a punch.
  7. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  8. Test the operation of the brakes.

ADJUSTMENT

The wheel bearings are not adjustable or repairable and should be replaced if found defective.

Trying to remove rear brake drum cover,have already adjusted star wheel and still won't remove. what am i doing wrong? for a 93 plymouth grand voyager


  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2. Remove the wheels and tire assemblies.
  3. Remove the brake shoe adjusting slot cover from the rear of backing plate.
  4. Insert a thin tool through the adjusting slot and hold the adjusting lever away from the star wheel.
  5. Insert an adjusting tool and back off the star wheel by prying downward with the tool.
  6. Remove the center hub dust cover, nut, washer, brake drum, hub and wheel bearings.
To install:
  1. Inspect the brake lining and drum for wear.
  2. Inspect the wheel cylinder for leakage. Service as required.
  3. Remove, clean, inspect and repack the wheel bearings.
  4. Install the brake drum and tighten the hub nut to 20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm), then back off the nut until bearing pressure is released.
  5. Retighten the nut finger tight, align the cotter pin hole and install the cotter pin.
  6. Adjust the rear brakes as described in the beginning of this section.

Replace rear brake shoes on 1999 nissan altima and now the drum will not fit back on.


if the orginal drums there might be a lip of rust and metal buildup that needs to be cleaned off. try also backing the adjuster off to allow the drum to go over the shoes, do the shoes look the same as the old ones, just more materal? Don't forget to adjust the shoes back to the drum so you gte a good pedal feel, and the rear brakes will work properly

How to change stud in rear wheel hub assembly. i need to know how to change the stud in the rear wheel hub assembly, and how do i go about taking it apart


Remove tire and wheel, remove caliper and brake rotor. DO NOT apply the brakes while the caliper is loose. Hit stud you want to replace hard with a LARGE HEAVY hammer to drive it out towards vehicle. DO NOT use a light hammer. It will distort the stud and possibly mushroom the end making it very difficult to remove. Once the stud is loose, you may or may not have enough room to get it out of the hole. You may need to pull the hub loose from the rear suspension to gain more room. Remove the stud. Place new stud in hole. Put a stack of washers over the stud, grease the threads, and using a new FLAT nut with the same threads as the lug nut, tighten until the stud is pulled all the way into the hub. Remove the flat nut, reattach the hub assembly (if you needed to take it loose) and reinstall the brakes.

Rear wheel bearing (1999) very loud, how do i fix it??


Before changing the real wheel bearings, you should thoroughly inspect your rear brakes. You would disassemble the back brakes anyway to change the bearings, and changing the brakes is easier. Remember to block the wheels up front, yes - safety first. As you pull off the rear drums, if you have to struggle to get them off, then that is a definite sign of wear and you'll need to do a rear brake job. As rear drum brakes are used, they have an auto adjust screw that tests and resets your brakes to ensure they are at proper distance to the drum surface. As brake shoes wear into the drums, they can create a groove or lip on the inside of the drum that the brakes will get caught upon when you try to remove worn brake drums. There should be a little hole on the interior side of the brake drum assembly and where you can fit a brake adjustment tool into. After you get the tool in there, it will touch against a star shaped wheel which is actually an adjusting nut. If you have a very small phillips screwdriver, place it inside this same hole and push the little arm that is touching this little star shaped nut. Everytime you back up and hit the brakes, this automatic adjustment lever pushes down on the little star shaped nut making sure that the brakes are not loose (keeps them snug). After you have this lever pushed away from the star shaped nut, use the brake tool to begin turning the star shaped nut until you have moved the screw back together, and the brake shoes have moved back towards each other, and you should then be able to easilly slide the brake drum off.

Once you get the rear drums off, you should try to turn the rear hub on each side and listen for noise and the feel of metal grinding (it should turn freely and smoothly). If the brake pads and drums are in good shape (plenty of brake padding left and no signs of metal wear upon the drums) AND you can feel and or hear the grinding as you turn the wheel hub assembly, then proceed with continuing to replace the rear wheel bearings. However, the more likely scenario is that you need a rear brake job, and doing a brake job is still easier than continuing to tear your brakes apart to replace the hub bearings.

Replacing rear wheel bearings on 1999 hyundai sonata


  1. for drum brakes with sealed hub(all one piece) remove lug nuts and wheel.
  2. spray penetrating oil around studs if there is a big phillips head screw visible remove it with impact driver/if not use big ballpeen hammer ,tap on flat of drum near studs(becareful not to hit them) until drum loosens(your creating a shockwave to loosen rust)
  3. once drum is off there are 4-bolts coming in from behind backing plate, remove them then hub should be able to be removed w/a little persuation from hammer.
with out sealed hub ,
  1. remove wheel
  2. remove dust cap,cotterpin,star washer(if equipped) do not re use cotter pin
  3. remove nut then washer, wiggle brake drum and front bearing will come out.
  4. put nut on shaft tighten 2-3 turns grab drum by sides and pull towards you this should remove drum leaving inner bearing/seal on shaft
  5. to replace reverse procedure making sure to pack new bearings w/grease(take drum and use long punch to remove bearing races, use race/seal installer to install new races
with disk brakes

  1. remove wheel
  2. remove caliper/bracket
  3. remove rotor
  4. remove 4-bolts from behind,tap old hub out
  5. reverse procedure
