what kind of carb do you have and what devices does it have on it? When does it stall--at idle or when you start out?

it has a single bbl carb and it has a temperature regulated choke. It stalls randomly its been doing this for about a week and I cant find the common denominator.

Look for intake leaks. Look for correct idle mixture, and anything loose, in terms of hoses and entire intake system.

Also, be sure that you have the carb heater working. I have witnessed carb iceing at measured 68 degrees f. This system collects warmth from the exhaust manifild and pipes into the air filter intake.

OK, DocPlayer has some good inputs, but I'm thinking now more on the electrical side. Could there be a crack in the coil tower (any sparks leaking to the terminal)? Does the point gap look good? how about changing the condenser? Just throwing some ideas out there. And it doesn't stall when you let off the gas? They used to do that before they started putting dashpots on the other side of the throttle link (I'm assuming you don't have a dashpot on the carb).

loosen the screws on the side of the choke (do this when the engine is cold) and rotate the housing in the direction so that the plate closes-don't crank it too tight, just enough so that it is lightly closed. When you start it, as it warms up and you blip the throttle, the tension from the bimetal spring that closes the choke will lessen, and it'll end up streight-up when the car is warmed up.

take hold of the carb with both hands and wiggle it side to side. if it moves you will need to remove the carb and tighten the screws under the carb bottom. leave comment.

I agree, jumped timing. Check to make sure the dist is tight. Than check for tdc on the #1 cylinder. When the #1 cyl is TDC the rotor should be pointing to that wire on the cap. Take the cap off while checking. Also is easier to turn motor by hand without plugs in motor.
