MOST OF THE TIME WHEN THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM GOES BAD THE CAR WILL HAVE HARD TO START PROBLEMS OR STALL OUT WHILE DRIVING.CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM COULD BE WORN OUT KEY OR FAULT IN THE BCM CONTROL MODULE.THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO FIX BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO REPROGRAM IT.COST ABOUT $600.00. FIX IT SOON BECAUSE TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AROUND TRAFFIC.BECAUSE FAULTY SECURITY THEFT SYSTEM WILL SHUT OFF FUEL PUMP.THATS VERY DANGEROUS.

1999 alero security light is on but the car start and runs fine. How do I turn it off?

This is normally 1 of 2 things. First, sometimes people bypass these systems in a cheap way. I've heard of people cutting wires and the security light stays on. This is not really a problem until you try to sell your car. Nobody wise will buy a car with a security light on. 2nd, the system might just be beginning to fail. The security light is controled by the antitheft system. So by it turning on, might indicate future problems. Here is a link that explains the system.

Iwas driving my 1999 alero n it studdered for a second. I gave it some gas nand managed to drive one block before it died. I tried to start it but it won't start it turned over but that is all it did

Look for a light on the dash that says SECURITY after it doesn't start. These cars and many more GM's have had problems with the antitheft system. Parts in the system tend to fail and cause this "no start" situation. Symptoms range from stalling while driving, to starting for 1-5 seconds and then stalling. This link might help you if this ends up being your problem.

I 'v been this roblems over 3 years and spent so much money to fix it. My 1999 Oldsmobile Alero wont start with security theft light flashing. I have to wait for 10 minutes and then if i lucky it may...

SOUND LIKE THE THEFT SECURITY PROBLEMS. MOST OF THE TIME.THE IGNITION KEYS OR IGNITION SWITCH KEY LOCK CYLINDER WORN WHERE THE BCM AND PCM DONT RECOGNIZE KEY OR SWITCH SIGNAL.SO THE BCM AND PCM WILL GO IN THEFT SECURITY MODE.THE DEALERSHIP WILL HAVE TO FIX.BECAUSE IF THE KEYS , IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK CYLINDER AND BCM HAS TO REPLACED.THEY WILL HAVE TO BE REPROGRAM USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT. NOT A HOME FIX.YOU WILL NEED TO GET FIX SOON AS POSSIBLE.BECAUSE FAULTY SECURITY THEFT CODE WILL SHUT DOWN VECHICLE FUEL SYSTEM WHILE DRIVING OR IT WILL GET TO A POINT WHERE CAR WONT START NO MORE.THIS FIX WILL COST ABOUT $600.00.

I have a 2001 olds alero, the car wont start and the security light is flashing

If the previous solution doesn't work, try this:

While the key is in "on" position and your security light is blinking, it is probably your "Passlock" security device acting up. Very common in these years for GM cars. To test if this is it, simply turn your key forward (to "on" position) until light stops blinking and eventually turns off (right around 10 minutes). Then, turn key back off, and then try to restart it. My Alero did this just a few months ago and I learned this trick as I was pricing out a new fuel pump. If this was your problem, I recommend taking it to a remote starter installer and have them by-pass the passlock system permanently. This should cost anywhere from $40-$100, but is much better than a new fuel pump and filter cost.
-note: I recommend not getting it by-passed until it happens a second time (which it may not), just don't forget the temporary fix!

1999 Alero won't start but it has power?

I had this problem with my 2000 alero turned out to be the fuel pump relay located in the fuse box under the hood. the air conditioner uses the same type relay swap them out and see if it starts, it doesn't cost anything.

Security light in 99 Oldsmobile Alero

There isnt a fuse for the theft system. You need to take the coloum cover off. Should be 3 screws and you will see all the wires in there. The ones you need are three togather. White Black and Yellow. Get the car started and cut the yellow wire. The theft light will come on and stay on but will bypass the theft system. If it is a 2 wire system you will see two little metal strips on the upper side of the key. You have to use a ohm meter and measure the resistance of the strip in there. Its a resistor used to tell the theft computer the key is in there. Anyway find out what the resistance is and buy a resistor from radio shack and look under the steering wheel for the 2 very small guage wires in a yellow cover....NOTE not the air bag wires. Simply cut those wires ( the 2 white ones) and on the set going away from the steering wheel strip the wires and put the resistor one one wire and the other end of it to the other wire....That will disable that system. If its the 2 wire and you have issues getting it simply take the car to a car audio place that does remote starts and for a nominal fee they will do it for you. My records show that it has the 3 wire system.
