I would suggest getting the system pressure tested. The overflow cap could be the problem. I would also suggest getting the system flushed. You can do this at home by buying a radiator flush cleaner. I usually drain out about a quart of water, pour in the cleaner and let the engine run for 3-5 min at normal operating temp. I let the engine cool down and remove the drain, I then put a water hose into the over flow tank filling the system until water comes out the drain hole for 1-2 min letting the water flow any other buildup out. I replace the plug and fill with 50/50 or whatever your car may call for.

You should have a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. They sell antifreeze testers and wal-mart and all car parts stores for pretty cheap. Get one and see where your car is at and go from there.

Check the radiator hoses after engine is warm.
If one is cold - the thermostat has failed and must be replaced.

2006 Chrysler 300c overheating. car temp. gauge went all the way hot. pulled over and shut car off. added water. every 3 days or so had to add a little more water. as long as i did this she was okay....

means the thermostat went bad from just water they need anti freeze to keep it from rusting and working properly also when you add water when its cold next time run the engine so it goes threw the block also squeeze the the upper radiator hose to get all the air out sounds like you have a air lock

Why is 99 olds alero have no heat and fluid coming out of overflow

You may have a physical obstruction between the radiator and the heater cool. This could be a kinked hose, a vapor lock, or a stuck thermo. While the car is cool, take off the radiator cap, and then let idle up to temperature and look to see if water is moving through the radiator. If no water is flowing, definitely start by replacing the thermostat and then go from there.

1999 Olds Alero. Low coolant light comes on and stays on even though its full. Starts running hot to the 3/4 mark. When the heater is turned on it cools off. Could this be the thermostat or the water pump.

TAKE RADIATOR CAP OFF WITH ENGINE COLD AND CHECK WATER ..MAKE SURE RADIATOR NOT BLOCKED,,PLASTIC BAG ETC. THIS SOUNDS LIKE LOW WATER OR RADIATOR ..STOPPED UP INSIDE ..IF YOU HAVE GOOD HEAT IT'S FULL OF WATER. REPLACE T STAT B4 RADIATOR..IT'S CHEAPER. ALSO CHECK FOR RADIATOR COOLING FAN OPPERATION..I,M RULING OUT THE WATER PUMP.

it may have a blown head gasket if it keep over heating or there could be just an air lock in the cooling water,, you will need to bleed the air out to stop the over heat as the water is not going around the engine its not opening the thermostat so it cant bleed its self take off a water pipe thats the higest pipe you can find it may have a bleed vent in a pipe were you can bleed it from ,,,top up the rad and header tank take off the bleed nippel when water with no air is coming out and the jobs a good un? run the motor for a time or go for a drive to check its not ever heating again and the heater should by now be blowing hot air,, top up the rad and header tank when its coold down

Heat isnt working...place on heat and turn on but it just stays cold?? Its been like this for like a week or so..it was doing this then started for a few days where it would kinda get warm again and then...

Try bleeding the air out of the cooling system. At the front of the engine, on top, should be a bleed valve. It's small, and looks similar to a grease fitting. This is the highest point in the cooling system and eventually all air in the system will accumulate here.

Make sure the coolant reservoir is serviced to the correct level. With the engine cold, but running, open the bleed valve until coolant starts coming out. Close it and wait for a few minutes. Keep opening it intermittently until no more air bubbles out -- until the engine is warm.

I think you started out looking in the right places. Replacing the coolant, thermostat, relay and sensor are all fairly inexpensive.

I believe you either have blockage in the system (especially if you're using tapwater), or your water pump may be failing.

I would first either take it to a radiator shop and have them flush the cooling system out thoroughly, or else pick up a chemical flush kit and do it yourself. This involves more than just drain and refill.

If this doesn't work, your next step will probably be replacing the water pump. At almost 200k miles, it's probably about due anyway.

1999 Olds Alero leaking coolant and running rough

in my experience it sounds like a head gasket problem it maybe leaking into the cylinders or could be a small leak from one of the hoses I would do a compression test just to make sure and then pressurize the entire system using radiator and coolant tester if pressure holds then its not a leak as far as the fans go just have the car running when it reaches the middle of the temp gauge it should come one if not you may need to run check on temp sensor or fan switch and fans them selves I would follow repair manual troubleshooting section on heating and cooling haynes or chiltons will do.
