It sounds like your shift interlock is not working. There is a switch on the brake pedal that activates a solonoid that unlocks the shifter. Try moving the shifter up twards park then apply the brake and try to pull out of park. If it does not release then you may start by cleaning the solonoid.

The air seeping is a dead giveaway. Your power brakes are now manual brakes, but stiffer. The diaphram in the brake booster has torn and the hissing noise is the engine vacuum escaping (you hear it louder when you depress the pedal right?). Replace the booster and you will be fine. The brake lights probably don't work because you can't push the pedal down far enought to release the switch. Please rate. Thanks.

Volt gage jumps when car shifts, not very often driving down highway, puting it in gear. sometime brakes do not aply correctly , double pump brakes before it will let shifter move out of park.

you have a couple problems:
1} check the electrical heading into the transmission - that controls the shifting solenoids - perhaps there is a poor or even possible an unhooked line in the transmission...
2} check the safety switch on the brake pedal to ensure it is functioning properly..
Best regards
Ck

The gear will not go into park and allow the truck to start nor move to any gear

HI the problem you are having is with the brake light switch if the switch isnt working then it wont allow you to change the gear.

get someone to check the lights for you have the ignition on and press the brakes and get someone to see if the brake lights come on, if they dont then the brake light switch will need replacing, the switch is located on the back of the brake pedal, its a bit difficult to get to and you have to get on your hands and knees and have a close look at the brake pedal the switch is located at the very top of the pedal and at the back you should see it it will have a couple of wires going to it.

if the brake lights are working then check that the brake lights are on when you try changing the gear you may need to press the brake pedal down a bit harder so the brake light switch works.

let me know if the brake lights are working then ill assist you further if the lights dont work then its the brake light switch that needs replacing.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

Gear shift stuck in park

The BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock) has a small spring retainer on the park safety. A small plastic tab breaks & releases the spring. This requires the shifter to be disassembled in order to be repaired.

Repaired mine Sunday May 1st and can provide detailed instructions if desired.

If you are lucky, your brake interlock is the only problem. There is a bypass switch located beside the gear selector. Remove the small "cubby" bin located next to the gear shift by simply lifting up to remove. You will note a small access port and a pink button contained therein. Press the pink button to override the brake interlock.

If you still cannot shift into park, then the shifter must be removed for the spring repair. Even if yours is still under warranty, you will get another shifter that will eventually fail due to poor engineering.

Please let me know if you would like my assistance.

It has to be shift lock solenoid (actuator). When this solenoid goes out it makes it so you can't put the vehicle into gear. Replace this and your vehicle will go back to normal. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. Thanks for using FixYa!

Pull the center console back & you will see a small seliniod that release the gear shifter when the brake is applied, maybe it's bad or no power to it.
