Question about 1992 Dodge Ram 150 Club Cab

I have a 1992 dodge power ram with a 318 in it. When the weather starts getting cooler in the evenings my truck won't start right away. It will turn over for about 5 minutes with the check engine light not on. After about 5 minutes of cranking the check engine light will start to come on and a ticking noise from the engine compartment starts on the driver side. It will then start up very rough but smooths out with a push of the gas. It will then start and run good all day. It only happens in the morning if it is cooler or cold.

    Sorry it took so long to get back to you......I have replaced all wires and plugs, fuel pump,coil,distributor cap, pick up coil, rotor button and the coil. I have checked my battery which is only 4 months old. It is good. I even unhooked it and let it sit for a few days. The check engine light has me fooled. The manual says if the check engine light doesn't come on when you turn the key then it is a faulty distributor. But my friends are telling me the crank sensor. I have checked all my relays and they are good.

I would guess a bad spark plug wire. Moist air will provide a path for the spark to jump to ground from a bad plug wire. You could test with a windex bottle filled with water and spray the engine in different spots. Also check for moisture under the distibutor cap.

    I am sorry that it took so long to get back to you. I have replaced all the plug wires and plugs, the fuel pump, coil, distributor cap, pick up coil, rotor button. I checked my battery and even left it unhooked to ensure that it wasnt draining on a ground. I have checked my relays. The thing that has me fooled is that the check engine light will not come on untill the relays stop clicking under the hood. Then the check engine light comes on and it fires. The owners manual says faulty distributor if the check engine light doesn't come on. All my mech. friends say crank sensor. I have purchased a crank sensor....that is going to be a bear getting it in.

    I had a similar my case the coolant temperature sensor was bad. The computer could not measure the temp, which resulted in very rough start up in the cold weather. As the vehicle ran, performance improved. The sensor does require some disassembly to get to, it is located above the water pump.

Won't start in cold weather

Check battery and connection,could be water in tank put some line gas unty freeze.

My 1996 dodge 1500 with a 318 will not idle why is that?

stop and idle stops, starts right back up and runs fine with a few rpm

If the coil has never been changed then replace it and the problem should go away. As the coil gets older it starts to cause power failure, they tend to break down more common during the hot summer like a battery. Also check your wiring to coil for any frayed or cracked insulation on wiring. Hope this will help you.

if truck has a ceramic ballist resistor near and connected to coil this could be problem or the crk posistion sensor could be too, i would change ballast first if you have on your truck appx cost $10
