Question about 1996 Ford Aerostar Extended

1 Answer

1996 aerostar charging problem.Replaced alt with a rebuilt one but still won't charge properly, gauge is showing a loss or discharge.Tested rebuilt alt and it is good, installed a used alt from wreckers and it worked for a short time then failed. Re-installed a different rebuilt alt an it won't charge either. Checked continuity on fusible link from alt to ECU and its good. Don't know what else to check for ?

Amp Gauge goes all the way past the highest number

amp gauge, and you forgot high number, 30, 60 , 80 , 100 amps?
and did it go left or right, one way is discharge other is charging.
key facts all.?????
no year,
no statement of , if car is stock or not.
if someone added a gauge, here,

back in the olden days, before the way better volt meter.
they had Amp gauges, many we ADD on.
most are wrong size. too. and installed WRONG. (ask correct way)
if the alt dies, the ammeter goes negative amps showing disgnarge ammount,
when runing right it ill be in the posative direction, charging battey
or at 0amps, battery is charged.
all this depends on how its installed.
if put in the alternator lead (big) it will only show alternator output.
10 to 50amps, 10 is typical. 50 be dead battery, running.

Alternator gauge shows discharge

Not sure I follow the story. The alternator is charging 100amps but the gauge shows less than 14 volts ? Is the alternator output at least 13.5 volts and is that getting to the battery ?

1996 lerado grand cheroke jeep, battery gauge went to to negative, no power new won;t stay running new battery, alternator checks out good any ideas

First check your battery get a cheap digital volt meter. Free at Harbor freight with a purchase. Fully charged battery 12.6 volts Not 12.5 or 4 or 3. With the volt meter set on DC volts touch the battery and have someone start the car if the meter shows high 13.5 to 14.7 the alternator is ok if it is less replace. If you have a dead short take out every fuse and relay from the black box under hood by the battery. Remember where they go and plug them one at a time until the discharge hits and at least you will know what circuit it is.They also sell about 20 dollars a plastic meter you hold over the positive battery cable to see if the starter is drawing to much power A battery open-circuit voltage test will show the approximate state-of-charge of a battery. This test can be used if no other battery tester is available.

Before proceeding with this test, completely charge the battery. Refer to Standard Procedures for the proper battery charging procedures.
  1. Before measuring the open-circuit voltage, the surface charge must be removed from the battery. Turn on the headlamps for fifteen seconds , then allow up to five minutes for the battery voltage to stabilize.
  2. Disconnect and isolate both battery cables, negative cable first.

118345962 Testing Open Circuit Voltage

  1. Using a voltmeter connected to the battery posts (see the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the voltmeter), measure the open-circuit voltage.

118345963
See the Open-Circuit Voltage Table. This voltage reading will indicate the battery state-of-charge, but will not reveal its cranking capacity. If a battery has an open-circuit voltage reading of 12.4 volts or greater , it may be tested to reveal its cranking capacity. Refer to Standard Procedures for the proper Micro 420 battery test procedures.

Battery light was flashing on dash, alternator was charging intermitently, had alternator tested on car and told diodes were bad.went to get it rebuilt and told its good.I need suggestions on what to check...

There isn't much to the charging system on any vehicle. The belt spins the alt copper binding and creates eletrical current. That current goes directly back to the battery. The other wire goes to the gauge in the dash. I would replace the alt. If you said it was intermittent and it tested good at the rebuild shop who is to say that wasn't one of it good times? Easy way to find out how good it is. While the car is running unhook the possitve terminal from the battery. If its good the car will stay running. If it isn't the car wont.

Charge light was on and alternator was overcharging. had alt. rebuilt and new voltage reguator, not charging now. only getting 2 to 3 volts are the charge fuse beside battery. new voltage reg is electronic...

There is a fuse under the dash that is the same one that operates the fuel gauge, if it blows the alternator wont charge. If the fuses are good I would take the alternator off and get it tested. Hopefully the rebuilder will warranty it. I would also make sure the new regulator is compatible with the old type regulator system. Most large auto parts stores can test alternators, and they normally do it free.

Battery light stays on.

If you disconnect the battery for 20 min it should kill all memory and reset everything. If not you charge is still low charge up your batt. with a charger.and test your alt. output 13.9-13.7 you have to check the book.I'm not to sure on that. You might have a voltage regulator problem bad batt. Or somthing is hooked up wrong. Mabey the old alt was fine. Have the batt. tested. All alt. well most are rebuilts so you might have a bad one it happens.Make sure that it's putting out a charge.
Loose alternator drive belt or loose or corroded battery cables. The battery itself may also be bad.
