Replaceing pinion seal on 2004 yukon took driveshaft out took nut and washer off cant get yoke off pinion. what do i need to do

Oil leak on rear diff where drive shaft enters diff


That's called your pinion seal. You can change it but when removing the driveshaft yoke, it is ESSENTIAL that you count the exact number of turns and partial turns it took to remove the nut and that you only tighten it that exact number. Make a mark on the nut and the shaft then make a corresponding mark on the outside of your socket and on the housing so you can count. You can use a large pipe wrench to hold the yoke from turning when you are removing the nut. If you have any up and down movement at the yoke before you begin, you have a deeper problem such as a failed inner or outer pinion bearing. To replace the outer isn't difficult but if the inner has failed, you will either need a professional to press it on and off the shaft and to re- set the clearances or just replace the differential.(sometimes cheaper) Always check the fluid level when doing that job.

How do u replace rear pinion seal,,do u need a puller to remove the yolk?


To remove the yoke, you need to remove the nut on the end of the pinion shaft. When you do that, you MUST count the turns as it comes off, including part turns. You can do that by marking the housing and the nut and putting another marking on the socket in the exact same position. If you don't do that you will change the pinion depth of the gearset and cause it to fail. (nut needs to be put back on with the exact same number or turns)
The yoke most often comes off easily or with a light tap of a hammer. Make sure you put that back on exactly in the same position you found it as well. Don't allow the differential to turn after you take it apart and also, use a large pipe wrench to hold the yoke from turning when you put it together.
Don't forget to check the lube level when you have finished,.

Leak at front of rear differential. How do i change the pinion seal.


Remove the driveshaft. You need an impact gun to remove the pinion yoke nut. Pull the yoke out and replace the seal. Make sure you tighten the pinion nut to the correct torque spec. (The dealer can tell you how tight it needs to be.)

Pinion seal on 2001 lincoln towncar


Trans in N parking brake on. Mark the universal with white out to put it back in the same spot. Remove the driveshaft. Mark the pinion nut with the yoke. Remove the nut, tap out the yoke, replace the seal. Tighten the nut back to the mark.

Changing rear axle seal on 78 ford f150. looking for diagram.


You probably have the 9 inch differential. If it is a rear wheel seal remove the tire and wheel assembly. Be sure to use a jack stand so you don't have the vehicle fall on you. Remove the 4 retaining bolts that hold the backing plate onto the housing. Pull the axle from the axle tube. It may be stubborn at removal. If it is the pinion seal remove the drive line. Remove the pinion nut that rests inside the yoke. Try to use an impact tool for easy removal. Once the nut is off the yoke willcome off. You may need a puller to help in removal. One the yoke is off remove the pinion shaft seal. Replace with a new seal. install the yoke and the washer and then the pinion nut. Re-torque the pinion nut to 150 foot pounds.

remove driveshaft from yoke by removing bolts and possition to side. Measure the preload on the on the pinion nut if you don't have the tool to do this mark the nut and make mark on yoke to later align nut when reinstalling. remove nut. some times a slide hammer is required to pull yoke out. At thi time pinion seal should also be replaced. istallation is the reverse tap yoke in install nut and align marks previously made then reinstall everything else

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

  1. Install an Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench on the nut and record the torque necessary to maintain rotation of the drive pinion gear through several revolutions.

  1. Index-mark the pinion flange and drive pinion gear stem to maintain initial balance during installation.

Installation
  1. Inspect the pinion flange seal journal for rust, nicks, and scratches prior to installing the flange. Polish the seal journal with fine crocus cloth, if necessary.
  1. Lubricate the pinion flange splines.
    • Use SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A.
  1. NOTE: Disregard the index marks if installing a new pinion flange. Position the pinion flange.
  1. Using the special tools, install the pinion flange.
  1. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Do not under any circumstance loosen the nut to reduce preload. If it is necessary to reduce preload, install a new collapsible spacer (4662) and nut. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Remove the special tool while taking preload readings with the Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench. Tighten the nut to set the preload.
    • Rotate the drive pinion occasionally to make sure the differential pinion bearings (4630) (4621) seat correctly. Take frequent differential pinion bearing torque preload readings by rotating the drive pinion with a Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench.
    • If the preload recorded prior to disassembly is lower than the specification for used bearings, then tighten the nut to specification. If the preload recorded prior to disassembly is higher than the specification for used bearings, then tighten the nut to the original reading as recorded.
    • Refer to the torque specification for used differential pinion bearings in the Specifications portion of this section.

Pinion seal leaking


check your rear diff vent if pluged clean it out and clean up the pinion seal.sometimes if the leak is caused by pluged vent and has not been leaking long once vent is clean sometimes the leak will stop.there is not a specific torque amount because it is rotational torque(how hard to turn pinion).there is a crush sleve on the pinion and if torqued too tight or too loose brg preload will be wrong and brg damage could result.mark and remove drive shaft.remove rear wheels,brakes,axles.so when turning pinion you dont have any drag from brakes or axles.mark the position of the yoke on the pinion.remove yoke,replace seal,reinstall yoke be sure to replace pinion nut.tighten nut until it takes the exact same amount of force to turn pinion as before taking original pinion nut off.hope this helps.
