The tensioners have always been a problem on the mini vans,if everything else that the belt rides on looks good then its probably the tensioner

Squealing noise in engine when first starting

this is usually a sign of a bad serpentine belt or belt tentioner. When you first start your engine the starter uses a lot of power from the battery. The squealing noise is the alternator trying to replace that power and the belt slipping on the alternator pully.

Vibration from belt on 2005 altima nissan

  • If the serpentine belt is vibrating a little this will be from a stretched belt or the tentioner arm spring getting weak. Had the same thing on my truck just the other day. If you look down while the belt is rotating and see if that arm is giving slack when it should not be. The other thing it could be is a pully starting to hang up just enough to catch the belt a little bit.

  1. Remove belt and test pulley by spinning them. All should spin freely minus the crank pulley.
  2. Look at the belt and see if there are cracks, rips, tears or excessively worn in it. If there are a few noticeable cracks around the inside of the belt then replace it, it needs it anyway.
  3. Now reach down to the tentioner and see if there is any play you can feel with your hand. If you can move that tentioner are easily with your hand the spring is weak and the entire are needs replaced. That's just one bolt in the center to replace that.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Where is belt tensioner and how do you turn it to loosen belt to change

The belt tentioner pully is the idler pully in the serpentine belt system...
You need a long wrnch (11/16??) to fit the pullys center bolt...
Turn the bolt to the right ( righty tighty) and the tentioner will losten its tention on the belt enough to remove the belt...
Imediately replace the belt ... so its routing is not forgotten by time or distraction...
If there is still a sticker on the upper radiator support reflecting the serpintine belt routing.. then you are in a better spot to be doing this ... with distractions...

What is adjusted in order to replace serpentine belt or tighten belt on 1997 GMC 454 3500 Truck? The air pump had siezed up- so I removed pulley and now have slack. Thanks in advance. Art

That serpentine belt system is designed to have all pulies in place.. The tention pully keeps it tight.. If you remove one of the pullies - the tention pully will not adjust that far..
The only options are - find a somewhat shorter belt with maching matching width and thickness.. Or replace the air pump..
Not the greatest news - I know.. But it is what it is my freind ;o)
