When in reverse and I hit the gas it boggs out and sometimes actually dies out. In drive it's like new. What could cause this?

Try manually shifting into low gear when you start and see if your car dies in low. If it dies in low you may just need to clean your throttle body or MAF.Most likely a dirty throttle, a tooth brush and some carb spray from a auto parts store can fix it. Follow the air cleaner duct to the engine and remove it from the throttle, clean as needed. Check out keep updated. Thanks

Could be a computer problem or shift solenoids in the transmission valve body might have gone bad. If have kept driving alot whils was getting worse might have killed trans. Need to take to dealer or qualified shop with the right computer equipment so they can test the system.

After hot engine wont start and smells like gas

Most likely causes are bad engine coolant temp sensor OR leaking fuel injectors. Bad engine coolant temp sensor will give computer false reading and computer provides wrong air fuel mixture. Leaking fuel injectors will load the engine with raw gas--just like flooding it. Try pushing the gas pedal to the floor and holding it there when cranking when hot. That forces the computer into "clear flood" mode and it shuts off the injectors. If it starts up with pedal down, that would be a sign of leaking injectors.

I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4X4, the truck dies in reverse

I have no idea if this relates to your problem or not but a fairly infrequent problem with Jeeps exists in some models if the transmission bolts loosen. Our son's problem also involved backing up (only; forward=no problem) and having the engine cut out as sometimes die. On a Jeep forum, a poster warned that if the hard-to-reach upper bell housing bolts weren't tightened properly, they would loosen and cause this problem.
