if car doesn't run hot with no thermostat...you may be air-locking system when installing thermostat. I always fill the engine block up to the thermostat housing to make sure that engine is full of fluid ..then install thermostat...spring facing down..thenfill radiator making sure car is running so as not to air lock system ...run until top hose gets warm ,showing that your thermostat opened

Have you tried replacing the overflowtank top. This can cause your problem. A lot of people don't realize this. It gets worn and can;t hold the pressure of coolant. Change it out $8 and let us know.

Just bought a 2000 Cadillac deville an I drove it 5 min. and it started over heating...the previous owner put a new radiator and thermostat in and said the heads was not blown..

he could be right about the heads but he may have put the thermostat in wrong and instead of opening it is blocking the coolant flow causing the overheating
The time span quoted is about right for a thermostat to start opening

Hi i bought 2002 nissan sentra ..previous owner replaced head gasket ,water pump.thermostat ...car was running good for a week then sudeny no hot air inside(blows but cold) and 10 minutes later...

Thermostat is the wrong temperature range for the vehicle or it is installed backwards. It is opening too soon and not allowing the vehicle engine to come up to operating temperature soon enough. Have system checked, replace thermostat with correct temperature for vehicle

Bought a car and the engine key doesn't open then door

If the ignition key does not open either door, the previous owner could have replaced the ignition lock.
The dealer may be able to cut you a door key from the VIN number.

You would have air pockets with a new thermostat and none if you leave it out.
Are you sure you are burping the cooling system with the new thermostat installed ?
Its also possible you have a leaking head gasket or other problem that is being amplified by having the thermostat installed. Something may be heating up with and not without.

My 91 chevy 1500 keeps overheating. thermostat opens, has correct amounts of fluids and doesnt overheat if you leave the the thermostat out.

Don't take this as an insult. I've seen it happen. Is the thermostat in the correct way? Faulty thermostat?

There could be several reasons that may cause an engine to overheat. It sounds like you have covered the most important ones. Thermostat, radiator and water pump. Hopefully you do not have internal damage, cracked head, head gasket, or a cracked block. I would try flushing the heater core and pay close attention to what comes out. You know, is it clogged with stop leak or rust. Then while I was flushing that I would drain the entire system and put in some Prestone super radiator flush. You just add plain water with it and run your vehicle for about 10 minutes. You then empty your cooliant system and refill with antifreeze. The flush works pretty well and if there is an obstruction from a previous owner putting stop leak in the system it generally will clean it out.
BTW, are you sure the thermostat is in properly? Not upside down? I think I would start there before I went through all of the work of flushing the system. It actually sounds like from everything you've done already, that's possible. Hey it does happen once in awhile. Was this car overheating when you bought it? If so, maybe the previous owner put it in upside down, and when you changed it put it in the same way by accident.
Hope this helps.
