Question about Buick Regal

2 Answers

98 Nuick Regal, 1st sign of trouble was when I used turn signal. Light on dash would come on,,ie. airbag, brake, ect. Next when I hit turn signal, speed odo went crazy and traction control off light came on. The next morning the car wouldn't start, no turnover, no nothing. Tried to jump,,no responce. A bit later neighbor and I talking told him it wouldn't start and of course car proved me wrong,,started right up. But in driving it still would get bad response to turn signal, finally it stalled when I used the turn signal. Vehicle started up but after getting home,, wouldn't start again. Installed new multi function turn switch and car ran great,,,,for several days. Then it wouldn't start again,, jiggle the connection block underdash and the car would start again,,sometimes. Replaced battery,,was 5 yrs old figured amps low. Car again ran great,,,for about a week,,then turn signal issues started again. Car not starting until I "played" under dash,, or messed with the wire bundle leading from the driver side door. This seemed to get me goin again. But only for bit. Car is now not turning over. "playing under dash not working,,moving wire bundle from door not working. With key in on position clicking noise coming from around brake peddle, Also when I press brake,, weird buzzing sound comes from it. Hope you can help me get it goin. Figuring to replace the ignition switch next. ? have found one for $32 but is it the right one?

Excellent response and I thank-you for your time and input. Please help me some more. Are you saying the problem, I assume a ground fault of some type, could be at the bulb location/s? As there as been positive results along each step I've taken, I'm left baffled. What about the ignition switch? or now I'm being told the PCM? Don't want to and can't afford to keep buying parts so really would like to get advise about the best next step.

Again,,thanx so much for your help.

  • digitaldaved Sep 07, 2010

Sorry, just reread you response. You do indicate the ignition switch change is advisable. I misread the 1st time through. I will send another post with a link to the switches I have found. Please look at and advice as to if the 1st one listed with work for my car. Here is the link:

Did I offend you? haven't heard back..

  • digitaldaved Sep 07, 2010

not sure how this works,,but I didn't reject your advise. Just wanted to get some more.

    Hope I didn't offend anyone. If I did,,I apologize.

  • digitaldaved Sep 08, 2010

not goin at all. Still don't have answers to my questions. Have been looking into PCM but can't find a way to reset it other than buy a new one. Read something about pulling fuses but not for my make and model. Ordered a new ignition switch as I have been told it's a good idea,,but then no follow through with other advice and questions I sent back,,so. Believe I have found the PCM you referred to.

I'm wondering if you and the other expert ever got my responses to either of you?

    Thanx

Go through the basic wiring of the turn signal system. The fault is any where in the wiring causing this problems.Replacing the ignition switch is good start, but still getting the turn signal wiring checked is advisable. I will explain how the turn signal wiring goes in your vehicle:--- How the turn-signal circuit is hooked up.The turn-signal circuit gets power when the ignition key is on. The power goes through a fuse panel into the thermal flasher. From there it goes to the stalk on the steering column.
Depending on the position of the turn-signal stalk, the power either stops in the switch or gets sent to the left or right turn-signal lights (including the indicator lights on the dashboard). Power flows through the filament of the lights and then is grounded.

Check the connections as per this.so you can replace the exact faulty part.

No no you did not offend any one.The comments you were sending were proper. But i was not online. So it was unable to reply.

I mentioned ignition switch because. The turn signal gets power to work when ignition switch turns on.If the ignition switch is getting short then it will not let the turn signal to run/function properly. But you replaced the ignition switch so ignore the ignition switch fault.
The flasher is under the left side of the dash mounted to the brake pedal bracket, the turn signal switch is the only one and yes that is the one in the column,it sounds like its the turn signal switch, though make sure all the lights/bulbs work,i have seen the rear tail/brake bulbs sockets get hot and melt causing a short.

Hi! You may need not to replace the ignition switch. Pretty much a PCM (powertrain control module) failure. The PCM has connectivity on all electrical current that runs inside the car including the engine, transmission, etc... You will need to have the PCM resetted for it to work for when the PCM is faulty the electrical current fails. HOpe this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

THe ECU goes to the engine but the PCM controls everything. It is usually located underneath the glove compartment or behind the radio center console.

I have no break lights or turn signals

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

For turn signal not working it can be faulty turn signal switch or its issue with wiring:----

I have a 1992 Buick La Sabre Custom. My brake lights are not working but taillights, turn signals and hazard lights do work. Switch ok. fuse ok. ????????

if your fuse is good. and you have power at the brake light switch and when you hit the brakes you have power coming out the otherside of brake light switch/which would be the white wire/ check that the white wire is sending power up the turn signal switch. if theres power there and your turnsignals work? im afraid that your turnsignal switch is bad rare but it has been known to happen.

95' Buick regal, 3rd brake light works, tail lights work, turn signals work, stoplight switch seems to work ie 3rd brake light working, fuse is ok, changed bulbs, but no rear brake lights.

If the third brake light works and the regular ones don't, it is most likely a bad turn signal (multifunction) switch. The switch is able to kill the brakes lights to run the turn signals, and in rare circumstances does this. I've seen it several times. It could also be wiring, especially near the turn signal switch, but it is usually the switch.

Just bought second hand 98 chevy lumina and someone stopped me saying I have no brake lights, so I checked and I only see a place for backup lights and turn signal lights. Why do I not have any break...

The brake light in the rear window and the main brake lights are on a different circuit. After the signal leaves the activating switch on the brake pedal arm, it splits. One circuit goes straight to the high mount brake light, the other goes into the turn signal switch. If the rear turn signals work but the brake lights don't, suspect the turn signal switch, not the bulbs and wires. Better to check this before removing and checking bulbs, wires and fuses. It is a common problem with the W-body cars like Lumina, Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Olds Cutlass and Pontiac Grand Prix. (Approx 94-99 models). Part number is GM 190005031 (w/o radio accessory control) or 19005032 (with radio controls)

A 1998 Buick Regal GS. 83,000 miles. For the last 30,000 miles, off and on, the engine shuts off when the turn signal is in use. I went to complain on the NHTSA site. Eight other Regal owners...

Maybe a solution.  Are you sure that its because your using your turn signal?  Does this occur while moving or while sitting idle?

My car engine would turn off while sitting idle at a traffic light.  Many people turn their signals on while idle instead of before they get to the light or stop sign.  There is a problem with the engine getting too hot while stopped and then turning off.  Make sure you're put your signal on before stopping and see if that makes a difference.  If it keeps turning off while just sitting it may be the engine.

However this might be something different and if so that very weird.
