Question about Dodge SRT4

1 Answer

Im stuck...I have an 04 Srt-4 and the Radiator Fans Havent been working period and with the California heat its making my car overheat quickly at idle. Ive taken the car to a shop and had a dianogstic ran on the cooling system. They put straight power to Radiator fan motors and they came on no problems. He told me it was a wiring problem between the Motor and the relay.Well i went to Auto Zone found out i had a bad radiator fan fuse and replaced it .No change.I turned the A/C on hot and cold ..Hot the fans kicked on for 2 secs literally and cold absolutely nothing . I have a High and Low and Control Relay for the radiator and i changed the Control , no change..I then pulled the fans out ..Pulled the wiring harness that hooks into the fan motor and the wiring harness looks pretty banged up .Took it to auto zone read the connectors out each side put out 15.5 volts ..so im assuming with them all being relatively the same that it was working ..We pulled a Regular Dodge Neon Haynes Manual off the shelf assuming that the wiring harness isnt much different..There next step was the Engine Cooling Temperature Sensor that comes out of the block ..pretty simple fix next they said check the computer. But everything else in the car works and no codes ..And im not one for throwing parts at a car..Im out of ideas and would like some sort of help

My 99 freightliner classic is overheating, the fan clutch doesn't work. What's a quick fix to get back home?

If your engine is overheating, Try this procedure:
  • Dirt and debris can get lodged in the radiator air flow paths. This can block the radiator and cause your engine to overheat and damage the engine.

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

Help with car overheating

My guess is that it overheated while you where sitting in traffic and since the fan couldn't come on the vehicle overheated. With the transmission codes and all that you have going on I'm afraid there isn't such a thing as a quick fix. How bad did it overheat and did the misfire codes come before or after overheating? Im trying to determine if you could possibly have a head gasket issue.

Within five minutes, it starts to redline overheat, if you drive 2000rpm, it goes down, but goes back up when you idle

it could be a stuck thermostat, or a plugged radiator or cooling system, check to be sure cooling fans come on when they should or it will overheat. when moving it is air cooled through radiator. thats why it over heats at a stand still. check fans first, it could be a fuse relay or the coolant tempurature if fans do not work or coolant sensor not turning on coolant fans at the proper tempurature.

Car is still over heating, have replaced heat sensor switch, fuel sensor switch, fuel air sensor and flushed the radiator.

Have you changed out the thermostat and checked for exhaust blow by from a head gasket leak? One quick way to check for blow by would be if you start the car with the cap off on the radiator and see if antifreeze begins to rise up in the radiator before the engine warms up. Exhaust leaking into the water jacket will bubble up through the radiator. This hot exhaust gas will cause you to overheat. A stuck thermostat will keep the antifreeze from ever reaching the radiator to cool down also causing you to overheat.

CHECK ANTIFREEZE IN RADIATOR.IF LOW ADD COOLANT.CHECK FOR LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES AND WATER PUMP HOSE.ALSO CHECK RADIATOR FOR LEAKS.IF ALL GOOD NO RADIATOR LEAKS.REPLACE THERMOSTAT.IF STILL OVER HEATS AFTER REPLACING THERMOSTAT .CHECK COOLING FANS FOR OPERATION AND COOLANT SENSOR.ALSO CHECK TO MAKE SURE WATER PUMP WEEP HOLES IS NOT LEAKING.BECAUSE A BAD WATER PUMP CAUSES OVERHEATING ALSO.

Thermastat stuck and cooling fans do not come on

If your thermostat is stuck in the closed position , it will not let coolant circulate to the radiator and the engine will overheat quickly. Fans won't come on because the temp sensor for the fans is usualy in the radiator. If the thermostat dosn't send hot coolant to the radiator , the fans don't know they should be on.
Only solution is to replace the faulty thermostat. I recomend that you dont drive the car at all with the bad thermostat. major overheat could severly damage Heads , head gasket , engine.
