2003 ford escort zx2, idles rough almost feels like it is going to stall, also has surges, has new serpintine belt, all new filters, have tried carb and fuel injector cleaners.

is the check engine light on? how many miles on the the car? have you checked for vacuum leaks? there is a timing hub on the exhaust cam that sticks and can create an internal vacuum leak. has the timing belt been replaced? it may have jumped time.

Car runs very rough at stops, dies at times but restarts, higher speeds runs great ,smooth. At idle sounds like vaccum leak inside throttlebody also slight manifolds to eng. head air leak, engine shakes...

There is a TSB for the PCV hose. The elbows at both ends get holes in the underside that you can't see unless you remove them and look. This is a very, very common issue on the ZX2. You can get a new PCV hose with both elbows for about $30 from the Ford dealership. You only need to remove the air intake to gain access to the PCV hose to replace it.

Why does my 2001 Ford Escort run rough and often die at an idle but seems fine oncethe RPMs are up?

There are two likely possibilities. One is a leaking vacuum line. Inspect the vacuum hoses closely. Listen for any tell-tale hissing sound. Oftentimes the culprit is the hose going from the PCV valve to the intake manifold. It is susceptible to cracking. While you're at it, check the condition of the PCV valve.

The other possibility is a faulty Idle Air Control (IDAC) valve. If the IDAC is not opening sufficiently, the engine will idle rough or die at idle. Try removing the IDAC entirely, so the air intake is open. If the engine idles ok with the IDAC removed, replace it with a new IDAC.

If neither one of these possibilities checks out, you will need further trouble-shooting.

Start rough

Sounds like it might be a vacuum leak. Check all the little vacuum hoses under the hood and make sure that they are attached and not split especially at the ends. You may even be able to hear a hiss with the engine running.

Starts and idles fine but has loss of power during driving and I hear a hissing sound I never heard before

A hissing sound is usually a vacuum leak in the intake system. Look for loose hoses (with the engine running) and the source of the hiss. If you find a nipple hissing, it may have lost a cap (it may be a vacuum test port) that prevents air entry.
An aside note: be sure to change the timing belt at the proper time. If it breaks while running, the engine with suffer severe valve and piston damage (many penny!)

Not running good.i have to put it in neutral when i stop so it doest stall out

check for a vacuum leak, sounds like a lean fuel condition, maybe a lean misfire... sometimes you can hear with your ears if it is a large enough vacuum leak, you need to preform a propane enrichment test, also check for a stuck open egr valve... also check all electric ign components... hope this helps, if it runs fine above idle at high rpm , lean towards a vacuum leak....

2000 Ford Escort ZX2 hot, idles ruff and sounds like a vacuum leak

Check your IAC,, Idle Air Control solenoid. It is attached to the throttle body and controls the air flow at idle by bleeding air into the throttle body.

2002 pontiac grand prix code reader says it is running lean dies runs rough

Sounds like a large vacuum leak. Possible hose off, intake gasket blown, etc. Listen for any vacuum hissing sounds from a leak somewhere.

Vehicle shuts off after hitting brakes

Press the brake pedal with the engine idling, do you hear any hissing? if so it is a leaky brake booster, the vacuum leak will cause a stall, another issue with this car is sludge in the throttle valve and idle speed control air-bypass valve, clean them both with carb spray with the engine running, use about 1/2 the can, hold the idle high or the engine will stall, then disconnect the battery for five minutes, reconnect and drive a few miles, if the stall is sludge related then this should correct the issue.
