I would do this, take out all fuses , now turn key on, all ok. no smoke, good. Now take a headlight and wire it so you have 2 wires, and touch each end of the wire so the headlight takes place of the fuse. now touch each fuse connector. if the headlight lights up, then that is the shorted circuit to check. You can leave it connected and start unplugging things on the fuse circuit or start moving wires, when you are close to the short, the light will flicker.

I have a 87 Chevy silverado when I turn the key over it clicks then smoke comes from under the dash on the passenger side is it a problem with starter

No....You have something else going on here and I don't know where to start exactly. You will have to have someone else observe where the smoke is coming from but it should low voltage. I would have a pro look at this one.

Key switch on 1998 taurus

I would look for a direct short in your wiring harness. It sounds to me like the wires are shorted together under your dash or maybe even out by your starter. Look for a location that contains the ignition wires and the starting circut.

Car won't start

What makes you think that it may be a short? Did you smell or see smoke? Try to listen carefully as soon as you install the key in the ignition and turn it all the way, like you are going to turn it on, just don't. Do you hear the fuel pump activate. Sounds like a low whinny sound from the rear of the vehicle. if yes, then you know you have fuel to your injectors. Next thing would be to check for power to the ignition coil/distributor. pull one plug and crank to see if you have spark. make sure all these check out ok before determining a short.

Smoke from 95 Camaro steering column

Where ever there's smoke, there's fire. This could be the multifunction switch arching and burning the lubrication in the assembly. Multifunction meaning, one switch that operates the turn signal wipers, cruise etc.
