Question about Ford Explorer

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer and driving today the dash battery light came on and the gauge on the dash indacated battery was not charging, I looked at the belts and they seem to be tight and I put a voltage tester on the battery and it read 12.2 amps off and a little less when it was running, the battery is maintenance free and the green indictator lite on the battery is green, it there another way to check and see if the alternator is producting charging amps? The ford has 115,000 miles on it.

It needs a alternator because with it running the meter needs to read 13.5 to 14.5 volts

sounds like a dead battery , try a jump start ,if it starts have the alternator charge rate checked as if low may have been the cause of the battery going flat, then recharge the battery with a drive of about 20 miles

Loose connection or alternator issue. Need to check the battery cables for a bad connection going to the alternator or to ground. That light comes on when voltage to the ECU drops below a threshold voltage. Sounds like a bad alternator. The light come on brighter when the engine is off because there is no other electrical load being drawn from the battery ( no coils or injectors or fuel pump running) Recharge the battery and have a mechanic check the charging system.

Sort of. The gauge reading low means the alternator is not charging the battery, which is why it stopped running. The actual problem could be the alternator or a wiring problem on the truck.

Well everything but the headlights are controlled by the ignition switch so it must be something before the key switch. So I would look at the major fuses not the small ones. There may be a broken wire or connection between the battery and the fuse box.

My 2005 ford explorer the charging system light comes on when i get over 2000 rpms.. i put a test light on altenator wire that comes from the altenator to the battery. and accelerated the the vehicle while...

the alternator bushing is worn and failing when the alternator reaches over 2000 rpm it basically does not contact the bushings any longer and will not make contact, make sure the belt is not slipping, other than putting a load test on the alternator to verify that it is working properly, as it may be the gauge. A test light will not help. A battery alternator tester is relatively cheep, even a corner garage may have one and help you out. Being an 05 it is completely possible that is the alternator all together.

2003 ford explorer battery light on

Are you sure the alternator isnt "over" charging? if not, you may have a "loose" connection somewhere with the cables, or a malfunction in the dash cluster. Also, are you positive the battery is forsure good?
