Yes, they can. Use brake cleaner or a similar solvent cleaner. The build up of carbon etc is what causes them to stick. Check that it is not broken first, as in the rod can be moved. If its jammed you will have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. Bad Times.

The engine turns over but it won't start.

Unfortunately the F9Q (1.9 DCi) has 3 common faults, these are as follows

1. MAFS Mass air flow sensor - this will cause initially hesitation but eventually make the car really slow as the turbo waste gate will no longer open.

2. EGR - Exhaust gas recurcultion valve - a result fro the forementioned, the MAFS failure causes high carbon build up, this sticks to the valve and siezes it open, this causes an inlet pressure fault code

3. In-line fuel pump - this pump is a 3bar pressure pump that really plays up then gives up the ghost, hence *non starter* it could be hidden away somewhere on the chassis, you need to look for it, it could be mounted under an wheel arch etc. It is about 5" long and 2.5" diametre, it is inline so a pipe at either end and 2 wires going to it.

I bet my last dollar thats what is up. It fits in with what you said.

Let me know if UK I may help more

Merry Christmas

Renault laguna sports tourer 1.9 dci wont start

Try the relays under the bonnet fuse box 4 small black ones in a line, the first 2 from top cut of the fuel pump, and are a renowned cause of 85% of cranking without starting faults on the dci engine swap them over for the bottom 2 .
If it starts, buy 2 from Renault and fit
if the engine still fails to start the egr valve may be stuck closed starving the engine of air, its on the top of the engine at the air intake and has 3 bolts, remove it and clean it with carb cleaner then check its condition, if it appears ok, replace the cleaned one, if not you need a new one or the turbo will blow its seals and the engine will rev and burn on the engines own oil.
beyond this and your diy fixes are at an end without a obd2 code reader.

LACK OF POWER

Does it smoke? Could possibly be sticking EGR valve. Remove and clean, or blank off and try running without it. If it runs better, this is your problem.
