Question about 1991 Ford F250

I have a 1991 F250, it puts out really black smoke when first started. Smoothes out after it warms up. What could be causing this?

After my 1991 ford f250 with a 5.0 engine warms up it acts like the timings off


Could be several things.
If the ignition module on the side of the distributor is failing, it can cause the plugs to fire at the wrong times.
If the distributor cap is faulty it can do the same thing.
If one of the injectors is leaking, it can fill one of the cylinders with fuel when you shut the engine off. It would act like the engine is flooded when you try to start it.

My 1991 pickup uses lots of oil. Blowing out the exhaust.


You may notice when fired up blue smoke that fades when warm, oilrings worn..

Rough low idle and black smoke


Bad carb or fuel injection issues- the system is fuel rich (black smoke) and also fuel rich system can make the idle low. Many things can cause this but thses are just a few.

Ford f25 1991 the heater belt starts smoking when turn on. We do not use the air conditioner


I would take off the belt and check each pulley for free movement when the car is off. For example, if there is an air pump, it should turn freely. Or, if the alternator pulley is disconnected from the belt, it should turn relatively freely.

97 f250 5.8L starts to run rough and puffs out thick black smoke. It comes and goes. Any ideas?


Exhaust problems. Black smoke=exhaust, blue smoke=oil, white smoke=water.

We think it is the diesel injection pump but not sure


Sounds like not all the glow plugs are working.It should run fairly smooth on a cold start if all of the glow plugs are working..Also you shouldn't drive off on a cold start with a diesel,Its really hard on the motors..At least give them 10 to 15 min on a cold start..The oil in them is a really thick oil and when there drove on a cold start theres no oil lubricating the internal parts and will cause the motor to seize up..You may already no this and dont mean you drive it as soon as you start it i just wanted to let you know..When you get alot of white smoke it could be two things,Theres water in the fuel which will make it not have much power die and smoke..But if it runs fine when its warm theres some bad glow plugs...Hope this helps you and have a great day

F250 hard to start once warmed up.


You may have a CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) problem. If the coolant level is low the CTS could be sending a false signal to the ECM or the CTS may be faulty. The CTS must be in coolant to provide an accurate signal to the ECM and if the coolant level is low then the ECM thinks the engine is cold and therefore provides a rich air/fuel mixture. This, in turn could be the cause hard start (evident by black smoke from the exhaust), and could be the reason the vehicle failed the emission test.
