Question about 1981 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

I have an 81 Vette that I'm trying to get back on the road after returning from three years overseas. Fixed pretty much everything except for one last problem with my transmission, it goes in all the gears and works in all except for reverse. It feels just neutral, and no matter how much gas i give it, it just sits there. I'm guessing a valve problem but I'm hoping for an easier fix.

I guess I need to start by saying I am not a Corvette expert, and this may not be of much help. The folks who answer questions are all volunteers like me.
The C4 series Corvette which includes your model year came with two options. The FX3 option was a selective ride suspension control which used special shocks that a computer dialed to either standard or performance mode depending on the driver's choice and road conditions. The only thing different from cars without the option was the special shocks and some sensors.
The other option was Z07 which was adjustable or special suspension. The Z07 option was supposed to include special sway bars, springs, and wheels plus the FX3 package.
I'm not finding anything about a factory air suspension system. Thats not to say it did not exist. There are lots of aftermarket kits to put air bags on a Vette.
Normally, as long as the ride height is normal, a rough ride would be attributed to bad shocks or struts.
The FX3 system included a computer that did a self-check when you started the car. As long as you did not see a light saying Service SRS or SRC everything was ok. SRS in this case was for Special Ride or Sport Ride Suspension and SRC was for Service Ride Control. If the light stayed on the computer was scanned for trouble codes like the engine computer.
Do you know if the air ride is a factory install ?

My 89 vette's headlights only open half-way. Is it a gear/bushing problem or a vacuum problem?

There are three round plastic pellets that wear out and turn to powder causing the headlight gearbox to malfunction. They cost about 4 dollars per side, pretty easy fix if you take your time. I just replaced them in my 89 vette. Of course I bought the best brass gear thinking I needed them. The plastic gear was still in great shape, don't waste your money, you don't need the brass gear, They cost $58.00 each. All you need is the pellets, $4.00 on ebay. There is no vacuum on the headlight system

Transmision stuck in 2nd gear

Either shift linkage or most likely you will
have to pull the trans & replace all the synchros

Other than pulling it out
The trans is fairly easy to do

Ordered a new 65 vette back then
Had it apart all the time, for 8 years
Everything but the body off

Would rather live in the 1960's, than
in this mess we have today

Wires came loose on 81 vette elect door locks when i took panel off need to know what order to put them back them nothing in chiltons? drivers side

I'm going to guess that's it's just a two wire hook up. There's only two ways to hook it up. Try it one way and if the door locks when you press lock on the switch it's on there right, otherwise just reverse the wires.

I have an 81 vette and the power lock lock the door but will not unlock?

Are you getting power to the solenoid when you press lock/unlock? If you are, because of the age I would suggest looking at the door latch asm.'s. They are known to rust up and cause malfunctions.
