There are 2 relays for the radiator fan because it has 2 speeds and 2 windings in the fan motor. The relays are in the fuse box, near the battery, under the air cleaner.

But its could also be the temperature sensors by the thermostat housing, or the fan motor itself could be burned out.
Check it there is voltage at the fan, with a test light.
Make sure you test the fan ground as well.
Grounding the sensor should make the relay go on and make the fan then go on.

Relay may be ok, check the temperature sending unit that signals the relay to run the fan, it may just provide the ground for the cooling fan! Temperature sensor for the cooling fan circuit!

Would lack of an EATX Relay cause the Engine Cooling Fans to Fail to run?


Eatx is the transmission relay. Nothing to do with the fans. Fans quit working because of the fuse, relay,wiring, resistor, and sometimes the PCM.

must we decode that to a symptom,. kinda hard right.

I will not guess. what is wrong, nor what is not working on your car. now what fans you are talking about, up to 4 fans on cars.

cab blower fan (wild guess blower is ok) and so is HVAC, ?
radiator fans
Condenser fan.

my wild guess to , engine over heats?????????
if yes, the scan it first. no not last FIRST.
it dont work like you think its not a 1988 Samurai.

on modern cars, they got smarter, the engine goes
gee the PCM knows water temp why have a fan temp regulator.
hark , now it dont. (saves cash on useless parts)
but has a relay , (well until you have my car and the relay is now 100% electronic, called a huge transistor)
we've used this tech in industry for years, but car makers just learning how still.
i digress. but evolution and history helps diagnosis.

"The engine cooling fan system consists of 2 electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the engine control module (ECM) to operate both fans together at low or high speeds. The cooling fans receive positive voltage from the cooling fan relays which receive battery positive voltage from the underhood fuse block.
During low speed operation, the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed cooling fan relay which is fan 1 relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the low speed fan relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and supplies battery positive voltage from the fan 1 fuse through the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the left cooling fan. The ground path for the left cooling fan is through the series/parallel relay which is fan 2 relay, and the right cooling fan. The result is a series circuit with both fans running at low speed.
During high speed operation the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed fan relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. The ECM grounds the high speed fan relay, which is fan 3 relay, and the series/parallel relay, which is fan 2 relay through the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the series/parallel relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and provides a ground path for the left cooling fan. At the same time the high speed fan relay coil is energized closing the relay contacts and provides battery positive voltage from the fan 2 fuse 1 on the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the right cooling fan. During high speed fan operation, both engine cooling fans have their own ground path. The result is a parallel circuit with both fans running at high speed.
When the request for fan activation is withdrawn, the fan may not turn OFF until the ignition switch is moved to the OFF position or the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 16 km/h (10 mph). This is to prevent a fan from cycling ON and OFF excessively at idle.

is the ECT showing overheat, yes no?
if yes, it must operate a fan or 2.
the book even covers all tests for fans dead, in a large truth table.
both the FSM and alldata.com have that, its no secret ,its published in 4 major places.

lets back up
if the engine coolant is low (no that side tank the engine and rad)
the ECT will lie. if that happens the fans may not come one
that is because the ECT is useless measuring air, for water.
that water must touch ECT for ECT to work.
this is FIRST
then scan the ECT does it show overheating, IT must if it IS overheating. fix that next if it lies to you,(IR gun in hand)

The system has staged fans.
i cant find the trip points in my crappyy online pages.
but is like 225f then 250f trips. is my guess...
about. if the engine over heats, check fuses first then scan it.
it will simply tell you why its bad.
eg, fan1 output dead.
or if you hot wire a fan and its dead, then it is.
(only on cars with non modulated fans,,hot wire them,else not.)

this is how it really works
the ECU has software that decide trip points for fans.
hard coded, this is. based on how hot it is and if A/C is on not.
its way smarter than 1988 and better.
the DTC errors can see an open line, shorted to ground or stuck 12v.(runs all time error)
(tells you relay is good or not)

Cooling fans run continuosly on 2001 alero


When the temp sensor fails, the computer will turn on the fan relay as a precaution to overheating.
Once you find the problem with the sensor you may also fix the fan problem.
If the check engine light is on you should also check the computer for trouble codes.

In the engine compartment fuse junction box its the fourth relay,you cant miss it, The fan fuse is the big 30 amp fuse.The cooling fan should come on when the air conditioning switch is activated,Your problem you are dealing with is common on Saturn the cooling fan never comes on.And you have to use the air condition system just to turn the fan on.Heres a way to trouble shoot the fan if you cant find the relay for the fan or you found the relay theres is two big relays one is the cooling fan.The other is the air pump ,take the cover off the relay and expose the mechanism,get a non conductive tool a toothpick will work fine collapse the relay so it make contact with the key on engine off make the relay make contact the fan should come on ,if it doesnt and you see spark(little spark)as you close the relay this tell you the power works replace the fan..if the fan comes on swap the relay.

My cadi 1988 is running ruff and quit running feels like over heating but no leaks, just smells


REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.MAKE SURE COOLANT NOT LOW.IF ALL IS GOOD CHECK FOR LEAKING WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP.MAKE SURE COOLING FANS RUNNING.IF ENGINE RUNNING HOT WHILE SITTING LONG TRAFFIC LINE AND COOLANT NOT RUNNING.CHECK COOLANT FAN RELAYS AND FUSE.IF ALL IS GOOD HOT WIRE MAKE SURE COOLING FAN MOTOR GOOD IF COOLING FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOT WIRED FAN MOTOR BAD.IF FAN MOTOR OKAY AND FUSE RELAYS GOOD YOU HAVE FAULTY COOLING FAN WIRING.YOU COULD HAVE BAD ENGINE COOLANT SENSOR OR FAULT IN ECM CODE SCAN TO CHECK THEM BOTH.CHECK ENGINE OIL.LOOK LIKE MILK SHAKE YOU HAVE LEAKING HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS OKAY.YOUR ENGINE BLOCK, RADIATOR AND HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING.

Just a half of answer. Yes there is a cooling fan relay. Yes it sounds like it quit working. Sorry I cant tell you exactly where the relay is . It will be under the hood and under the plastic cover it will say fan relay. Have a look see.

Hello.

You have an unfortunatly very common problem.
You have a sticking cooling fan relay.

We see this quite often in our service department.

Here is what you need to do:
With the key off, engine off, and the the cooing fan running, open the fuse/relay box, under the hood, on the driver side of the engine compartment.

Locate the 3 cooling fan relays, as marked under the lid. If you do not have a lid, simply remove relays until the cooling fan stops.

Take this relay to a Toyota dealership parts dept, and have them sell you a replacement.
You cannot 'fix' the problem with the relay, the relay needs to be replaced.

The radiator cooling fan quit working


I would change the fan relay.If you know how you can run jumper wires from the battery to your fan the positive and negatives if fan works relay if not fan is shot.If you can't do that change the fan relay its most likely the problem.

Electrical fans


The cooling fans always receive power form the battery. The relays, when applied, allow the ground to pass onto the fan motors to operate them. Either your relays are stuck in the "active" position, or your fan motor wires (white with the black trace) are getting an unwanted ground. Remove all 3 of the relays, and the magnet clutch relay, see what happens. If the fans quit, the relays are at fault. If the fans continue to run, you have a fan motor ground wire shorted to the ground.
