Question about 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

1 Answer

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel with an Allison 1000 series transmission. When going up a hill around 45-50mph the truck will make a very hard down shift and stick in 4th gear, it will not up or down shift again after that unless I pull over, shut the truck off for about 30 seconds then restart, but then the service engine soon light comes on and it seems to shift hard for a while. I have found out that if i put the truck into neutral as soon as it shifts like this i can catch it before the light comes on and it will shift normally, but it has to be put in neutral as soon as it happens or it wont keep it from sticking. Its pretty dificult and frustrating to have to do this 3 or 4 times on my way home every day just to keep the truck from becoming stuck in 4th gear. When I bought the truck (4months ago) I was told that the tranny had just been rebuilt (however the problem first happend 20 min after leaving the dealership, but I purchased as is with no warantee) I had someone tell me they believe the 5th gear is slipping however I cant afford to have a new or rebuilt tranny put in this thing so any help would be extremely appreciated.

Have the 5th gear trans solenoid checked out at a trans shop. They can listen to what your problem is and also a test drive will pinpoint the troblem much better in person with a qualified transmission technician as well

I have had to replace my (what I think is called) transmission switch. The problem usually starts when the indicator light does not appear on the dash board as to what gear the truck is in. Now mine isn't unlocking the doors when put in park. I think I need to replace it again...sounds like that may be your problem too.

Transmission Fluid Capacity?

I will assume you have already drained the trany. You could have measure the fuid out and replaced all but a quart. Estimate what you took out minus a quart and run the trany through all the gears. let is set and measure what you need. Even simpler, get the manual for the unit and look up maintenace.

02 gmc allison tran. wont go into tow-haul mode

THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF PLOBLEMS WITH THE SHIFTER HANDLE/SWITCH. THE BEST WAY TO VERIFY CONCERN IS USE A DIAG. SCANNER & VIEW TRANSMISSION DATA DISPLAY WHILE ENGINE RUNNING. THE SWITCH IN THE SHIFTER IS FAULTY. IF YOU SEE NO INPUT CHANGE WHILE DEPRESSING SWITCH THIS IS YOUR CONCERN.
