Gas Saving

It came with your Audi for a reason. Use it on those longer drives at both high or lower speeds. Most times it will save you money on fuel, but there are times when it won’t. On hills and uphill grades cruise control can burn more fuel and rob you of the benefits of this modern marvel. That’s because on a hill cruise control will kick in to keep your speed perfect, making your engine work harder and burn more fuel in the process. With all the flat ground we have in South Florida we don't have too much to be concerned about in this regard, but do pay attention to those overpasses and large bridges.

When i go up a hill or any slope i can feel that my winstar is back fireing. the rpm's like jump up and down like it is struggling. i recently changed spark plugs and wires. what else can it be.

Generally speaking when a car stalls out going uphill, a few things come to a mechanical mind.

1. Going uphill produces a strain on the engine and drive components, if you have the old points and coil type vehicle one could suspect a faulty ignition coil as the culprit.

2. A vehicle on an incline may be low on fuel and thus stalls on a hill because it is starving for fuel on this incline.

3. A faulty float inside the float bowl of your carburator may be the problem.

A/C blows hot air going uphill or pulling a trailer.

you will need to change the clutch fan, under load or high speed will heat up the engine and the clutch fan should ingage to pull more are through the radiator. Also at idle with no air moving through that radiator the clutch should ingage to pull air through.

OK is around 2000 rpm cruising at 60mph (slightly more uphill) You should be at about 1700 going slower in high gear around town.
What you don't want to see is a "flair" when shifting, or rpm above 2500 at cruising speed except uphill. There are many things that influence rpm while driving...road conditions, uphill, downhill, tire size etc. but these numbers are a good "ballpark" reference. Your own experience with your car is the best baseline. If rpm is different than what you have gotten used to as "normal" you should have it checked out.
