Sorry sounds like the head gasket and you will need to use a special tool that connects to rad cap and shows the pressure in the cooling system when running ,or do a me and feel teh hoses and if hard then its pressurising ,head job

Water flowing out of radiator when idling 93 nissan terrano v6 petrol auto trans


If the coolant was hot when you noticed water coming out the radiator, that is normal from the heat expansion of the coolant. That is why there are coolant overflow tanks-also called coolant expansion tanks.
When refilling coolant, always top up the radiator, and fill the overflow tank to at least the cold mark level (about half-way up on the tank). With cap off, run engine till the thermostat opens- upper radiator hose will become hot-then shut off engine, add coolant to radiator as needed, replace cap. This method of filling will help to expel any trapped air in the system. Oh, and remember to set your heater controls on high when filling coolant, so the heater core and lines also circulate and expel air.
Check the seal on the radiator cap that it is still good. The cap seal is important to seal the coolant system, as it is a closed system under about 15 psi of pressure. The reason to pressurize the system is that the pressure will raise the boiling point of the coolant by about 10 degrees- important when you consider how hot the coolant has to be when running. OK, enough tutorial-I don't think you have a problem with the water pump! G'd luck, reeve.

My temp gauge goes to the third line before fans come on and only the low fan comes on. I already replaced thermostat, engine coolant temp. sensor and radiator flush... any idea why high fans dont come on...

The coolant is getting hot causing the engine to overheat.


This could have several causes. Is the coolant tank full? Is the coolant relatively fresh and a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze?
Does the heat gauge jump up to hot and then fall back rapidly at some point or just rise and keep climbing? If so, it is the thermostat. Is there a leak evident under the car? If so, it could be a bad water pump. The water pump has a small weep hole and if there is water at that point the pump needs to be replaced. If none of this is the cause, then it could be a plugged radiator or a faulty cap located on the radiator or the coolant overflow tank.

I own a 1988 190E mercedes benz, my problem is the rising temperature when it is on an idling mode


Ok things to check, air in system, coolant level low, cap holding pressure, leak at radiator or expansion tank, vicous fan, aux fan, A/C freon charged to allow low speed fan function, temp sensor for high sppeed aux fan funtion, thermostat, water pump, radiator cools 15 dgrees from inlet to outlet.

Check all that and youll find something wrong I am sure.

I have a 2004 BMW 330i and have replaced everything in the coolant system, and my vehicle is still leaking coolant out the expansion tank, or the cap where you add coolant to the radiator. I have use OEM...


We have had some similar problems with some BMW's,the last one we replaced the expansion tank.Before we attached the upper radiator hose to the radiator we filled the engine with antifreeze through the hose.Install the hose and fill your expansion tank to the proper level and run the engine to operating temperature.

Engine Cooling The cooling system components are the:
  • engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) (12A648)

  • dual speed fan motor assembly
The water pump circulates the coolant.
The water thermostat:
  • controls the engine coolant temperature.
  • allows quicker engine warm-up.
The degas bottle:
  • provides a location for fill.
  • contains coolant expansion and system pressurization.
  • provides air separation during operation.
  • replenishes the engine coolant to the system.
The fan motor (8C607):
  • operates only when the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  • will not operate with the switch in the OFF position.
The engine coolant flows:
  • from the lower radiator hose (8286) to the water pump.
  • from the water pump to the engine block and the cylinder heads.
A closed water thermostat returns the engine coolant to the water pump; an open water thermostat allows the engine coolant to flow to the radiator.
Engine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level in the degas bottle.
When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and engine coolant.

Where is the thermostat sensor


Both the 4.0L and 4.7L engines use 195� thermostats for all model years from 1999-2004. When replacing a thermostat it is very important to install one with the same temperature rating (the only exception might be with certain performance modifications or chips that recommend or require a different temperature thermostat).

4.0L engine - Draining the cooling system WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE THE CYLINDER BLOCK DRAIN PLUGS OR LOOSEN THE RADIATOR DRAINCOCK WITH SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE. SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN OCCUR.

1. DO NOT remove radiator cap first. With engine cold, locate radiator draincock on the right lower side of radiator facing to rear of vehicle.
2. Attach one end of a hose to the draincock. Put the other end into a clean container. Open draincock and drain coolant from radiator. This will empty the coolant reserve/overflow tank. The coolant does not have to be removed from the tank unless the system is being refilled with a fresh mixture. When tank is empty, remove radiator cap and continue draining cooling system. To drain the engine block of coolant, remove the cylinder block drain plug, located on the side of cylinder block below the exhaust manifold.

4.0L engine - refilling the cooling system Coolant recommendations and cautions: The recommended mixture is 50/50 ethylene-glycol and low mineral content water. Never use pure antifreeze. Only Mopar Antifreeze Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (glycol base coolant with corrosion inhibitors called HOAT) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% distilled water. Antifreeze mixture must always be at least 44%, all climates year round. Maximum protection (-90d) is provided with a 68% mixture protection. If the percentage is lower than 44 percent, engine parts may be eroded by cavitation, and cooling system components may be severely damaged by corrosion. CAUTION: Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Mixing of coolants other than specified (non-HOAT or other HOAT), may result in engine damage that may not be covered under the new vehicle warranty, and decreased corrosion protection.

CAUTION: Do not use coolant additives that are claimed to improve engine cooling. 4.0L coolant capacity: 1999-2000: 13.0 qts. (including 2.3 qts. for resevoir) 2001-2004: 15.0 qts. (including 1 qt. for resevoir)

1. Tighten the radiator draincock and the cylinder block drain plug(s) (if removed).
2. Fill system using a 50/50 mixture of ethyleneglycol antifreeze and low mineral content water. Fill radiator to top and install radiator cap. Add sufficient coolant to the reserve/overflow tank to raise level to FULL mark.
3. With heater control unit in the HEAT position, operate engine with radiator cap in place.
4. After engine has reached normal operating temperature, shut engine off and allow it to cool. When engine is cooling down, coolant will be drawn into the radiator from the reserve/overflow tank.
5. Add coolant to reserve/overflow tank as necessary. Only add coolant to the reserve/overflow tank when the engine is cold. Coolant level in a warm engine will be higher due to thermal expansion. To purge the cooling system of all air, this heat up/cool down cycle (adding coolant to cold engine) must be performed three times. Add necessary coolant to raise tank level to the FULL mark after each cool down period.

Volvo Radiator, Thermostat and Sensors Your cooling system's temperature controls include all coolant temperature sensors, Volvo thermostat, Volvo radiator or expansion tank cap, cooling fan(s) and fan clutch (if equipped). These cooling system parts function primarily independent of the engine but control the engine either through cooling or by sending control signals to your Volvo's electronic systems.
The Volvo thermostat is a spring-loaded valve that opens and closes based on the temperature of the coolant flowing through it. A high temperature reading followed by a drop to normal temperature (or a continuously low temperature) is a common first sign of a sticking Volvo thermostat. However, many other conditions may cause these symptoms, so you need to know how to eliminate each possibility.
The Volvo radiator or expansion tank cap is also a spring-loaded valve reacting to system pressure. It serves to maintain proper system coolant level at predetermined pressures. It must always be replaced with an exact replacement cap with the same pressure setting. Never use other caps except for short-term emergencies!
A belt-driven fan blade for pulling air through the Volvo radiator is usually on the Volvo water pump pulley and should have a fan clutch to control it. The fan clutch allows the fan to turn with the belt at low engine speed and "free-wheel" at higher speeds. A bad fan clutch either doesn't allow the fan to spin at low speed (overheating in traffic) or doesn't allow it to free-wheel at high speed (potential overheating on highway or reduced gas mileage).
An electric fan can be either by itself (usually front-wheel drive) or auxiliary (used with a mechanical fan). Both types are controlled via a temperature sensor - in the Volvo radiator or upper Volvo radiator hose or on the Volvo thermostat or Volvo water pump housing. This sensor is usually an on/off type switch with a fixed temperature setting. (Some vehicles may have 2-3 settings for multi-speed fans.) This sensor is commonly called an "auxilliary fan switch".
Other common temperature sensors are: 1) gauge sender (variable output); 2) warning light sender (on/off type); 3) lambda and/or fuel injection sensor(s) (variable to control fuel injection settings); 4) thermo-time switch (cold start valve control). Your Volvo may have other sensors as well.
Temperature control is critical to both performance and emission control. Unfortunately, this system is the most difficult to troubleshoot without proper equipment and diagrams. It's even more difficult with computers that adjust timing, idle speed, vacuum and fuel delivery automatically to make up for potentially faulty temperature sensor signals.
Maintenance of your cooling system sensors is virtually impossible since there's nothing really to "maintain". Keeping them clean both internally (coolant replacement) and externally (engine cleaning) is the best way to ensure trouble-free driving. Checking and replacing all parts at the factory-recommended time or mileage limits helps as well

you probably have air trapped in the system. Have dealer or radiator shop bleed system.
