1996 Ford Explorer Rear Gear Oil Fill Plug Location


Make sure to check all around the differential. Sometimes it's a rubber plug on the diff. Cover, or sometimes it is a bolt on backside (side facing front of vehicle) and it is a bolt with a square end in it that you would simply insert a ratchet without a socket into.

FILL HOLE IS LOCATED ON DIFFERENTIAL REAR COVER. LOOK AT DIFFERENTIAL COVER YOU WILL SEE A FILL PLUG IN COVER.REMOVE FILL PLUG USE A HAND PUMP OR SYRINGE OR FUNNEL ADD LUBRICANT UNTIL IT JUST REACHES FILL PLUG HOLE ABOUT 1/4 INCH BELOW FILL PLUG HOLE.

Right in the front of the tranmission up under their about 4" from the front is a black rubber booth about the size of a case dollar. and it is leaking from that booth, it is a 1997 f150 extending cad


you must be talking about a transmission inspection hole metal access cover with a rubber plug.could be the rubber plug leaking or the metal cover leaking where rubber plug leaking.

1. When refilling, remove dipstick to provide adequate venting and allow oil to flow into crankcase.
2. With ENG at operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in PARK and add fluid as needed.
3. Fill to no more than 1/4 to 9/16" below fill plug hole.
4. Fill no higher than 9.5 mm or 3/8" below fill plug.

1999 Ford Explorer 4WD v6 when I come to a complete stop and have my foot on the break pedal I hear this thump noise coming from the rear end and sometimes it thumps when i let off the break pedal and go...


Look for a broken trailing arm, or loose bolts or degraded rubber grommets on it. This is a piece of the suspension that goes from the frame to the strut. It holds the strut in place vertically. When broken or loose this truck can bang around back and forth. It could also a a worn out universal joint which can be hard to detect because even the slightest amount of play can cause noises. Perhaps even a loose brake caliper. But the gears in the differential may be becoming worn and sloppy as well. You can check up a rear tire and try moving it back and forth to see how much played there is in the differential and universal joint.

How do I change the rear and front Differential fluid?


There is a drain plug on some vehicles at the bottom side of the differential that must be removed to drain the old oil out but on others you must remove the cover which has at least ten bolts that are in a circle pattern around the differential cover. After removing the cover and draining the old oil out dry out the excess oil left inside the casing with a clean rag, scrape off any old gasket material on both the differential casing and the cover. Purchase a gasket for the cover and reinstall the cover tightening the bolts in a criss cross or X pattern not too tight . Proceed to locate the filler plug on the upper right or left side of the differential, this plug is usually removed with the square end of a 3/8" socket wrench just using the square end of the socket wrench should do it or you may need a large hex head allen wrench but usually using a short extention with the socket wrench to get the clearance to turn the square end of the extention or socket wrench inside the plug will work, some times the plug is very tight and you may need to use a 1/2' drive socket wrench with a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer or adapter to acheive the neccessary torque required to crack the filler plug free, now get a coulple of 80/90 weight gear oil quarts and cut the filler tip back a bit with a razor or utility knife and using a 3/8" length of rubber hose slide it over the end of the tip tighten a small hose clamp on to the hose to prevent it from sliding off the filler tip, then feed the end of the hose into the filler hole on the differential and invert and sqeeze the container of oil to force the oil into the differential until it fills and over flows out the filler hole, screw in the filler plug and tighten. Use this general procedure for both the front and back differentials.

not press fitted, standard tapered bearings, if 4X4 it is a little more involved, just dont misplace any of the smaller parts and you will be fine.

Replace left rear axle seal 1999 ford explorer


Axle Shaft Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Remove the differential housing cover (4033).
    1. Loosen the bolts and drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing (4010).
    1. Remove the bolts.
    1. Remove the differential housing cover.
Remove the rear brake disc (2C026). For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 .
  1. sxn~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Turning the differential case (4204) or an axle shaft (4234) with the differential pinion shaft (4211) removed will cause the differential pinion gears (4215) to fall out of the assembly and damage the components.
    Remove the differential pinion shaft.
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
  2. sxn~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove.
  3. Remove the U-washer (4N237).
  4. Push the axle shaft inboard.
  5. Remove the U-washer.
Reinstall the differential pinion shaft.
  1. Install the differential pinion shaft.
  2. Install the differential pinion shaft lock bolt finger-tight.
  3. sxn~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal (1177).
    Remove the axle shaft.

Seal Removal
  1. Remove the axle shaft (4334). For additional information, refer to Axle Shaft in this section.
  1. sxn~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal (1177) by itself. Always remove the rear wheel bearing (1225) and the inner wheel bearing oil seal at the same time.
    NOTE: If the wheel bearing oil seal is leaking, the axle housing vent may be plugged with foreign material.
    Using the special tools, remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal together.

  1. Lubricate the new rear wheel bearing.
    • For 4.0L SOHC and 4.0L EI with limited slip rear axles and 5.0L vehicles, use SAE 75W-140 High Performance Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A.
    • For 4.0L SOHC and 4.0L EI with conventional rear axles, use SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A.
  1. Using the special tools, install the rear wheel bearing.

    • Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.
  1. Using the special tools, install the wheel bearing oil seal.
