OBD Code P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

Symptoms: You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.

Causes: A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
* An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
* The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
* Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
* Retarded spark timing
* The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 error code include:
* Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
* Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
* Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
* Replace the catalytic converter

One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

Hope helps.

Why would you change any items?

Have you not googled the code?

420 & 430 are exhaust converter issues

You change no parts,you check for codes & component
test system faults using the codes, until you find a problem

Po 420 ?

code p0420 refers to cat converter system, bank 1 efficiency below threshold===causes --cat converter--wiring HO2S sensor 2

check that the cat converter is ok and replace the sensor. ( it is a HO2S sensor which will be different to a O2 sensor so get the right one )

Bank 1 p0420

Sometimes replacing the sensor fixes the problem, but more often the catalytic converter is at fault.
Code 420 means the converter is not performing up to standard. The engine computer is getting too much activity from the sensor after the cat than it should be. The number 2 sensor should be less active than sensor number one before the cat.
You would need to use a scanner to watch the data flow from the sensors and measure the temp of the cat to verify the problem.

How to fix the problem related to engine light on code PO 420 of Toyota corolla 2000, Engine 1.8L - golden03

Code PO 420 is telling you that the Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1), so the Cat converter inst working as it should according the the vehicles computer. This can be caused from the converter going bad from age and use. Or it can also mean you have a failing rear oxygen sensor, because this sensor is instrumental in keeping track of what the converter is doing. If the car is driven on several short trips, and hardly ever driven on the highway, you may be able to burn the deposits out of the converter and restore its function. To do this you should drive it on the highway for at least two hours. After this have the light reset. If the code comes back then have the converter and oxygen sensor tested. Most shops will simply want to replace them and see if it fixes the problem. Don't fall for this, because it is expensive, and you don't need them changed unless they are bad. Get the converter tested and the oxygen sensor tested prior to replacement. The problem could be as simple as a bad electrical connection on the oxygen sensor, that is why I say have them tested.
