Question about Ford E-350

1998 Ford E350 van w/ 5.4 and ABS. Rebuilding as I go. rotor and pads look very good I was told that the rear brakes were fine by the front end mechanic last week. I do have pulsing on the brake pedal so I think the rotors and drums need to be checked and maybe turned. When applying the brake at high speed the van shutters (trueing rotor will fix I think) On a trip this weekend and had to stop quick and shuttered bad. Later the ABS light came on. Fluid up, no sponge in the pedal. Any ideas why the light is on? How do I correct this? Will truing the drums and rotors take care of the light?

Dont bother skimming the rotors,fit new,A,its cheaper in the long run.B,if skimming works,the thinner rotors will buckle quicker.

My Ford E-350 Van Shakes when braking. I have replaced the Rotors and Brake pads and it still shakes only when braking. What else could be causing this?


Welcome to the world of Ford Truck!!! The rear rotors come off the same way that the front rotors come off, only they get REALLY stuck to the rear hub assembly. Once you have removed the caliper and caliper mounting frame, take a BIG hammer and BEAT the rotors loose.

They make a "drum and rotor puller" for this job, but it is pretty expensive - especially if you are only going to do one set of brakes...even most professionals that do these all the time cannot justify the cost of the tool. The rotors for your truck are not that expensive, and they usually get destroyed trying to get them off anyway...so we always replace them at our shop.

Master cylinder and/or brake booster could be the problem. A tiny bit of air in the system will effect your braking abilty. A fault in the ABS system would prompt the computer to trigger the ABS light. If you have brake shoes on the rear, make sure they are properly adjusted. Hope this helps.

Using the C-Clamp is the proper way to retract the pistons. So it wasn`t your fault for the aABS light.
check the brake fluid level, check the wheel speed sensors connection on all 4 wheels,
Drive vehicle for a few miles too see if the ABS resets itself.
If the light is still on, then have the truck checked with a SCANNER for the ABS problem..

1998 chevy express van 3500 front brakes and rear are new, front calipers are new but ABS light on dash is on, the front brakes smoke after a little while of driving. Thanks Joe


I'd first make sure the new pads are the correct size. Doesn't happen very often but maybe the parts person gave you the wrong size pads ( for the smoking problem). As for the ABS light, most newer cars will throw out codes if you wait too long to change them out, I would contact a chevy dealer or search online about reseting the code (light).

When applying the brakes, the whole car shimmys. replaced rear rotors , turned front rotors , and replaced all the pads


I think you should get the Tierod ends checked. When you get a Front-end alignment, the mechanic will check them. Although you turned the front Rotors, when you start Braking the front tires can wander differently than when they freewheel.

Sometimes you can get a rust problem on the Rotors that were just made shiny. Moisture on the pads imprints a rust blotch on the Rotor and they grab at the rust until the rust wears down. Then they are ok.

When the rear Rotors were replaced check your bill and see if the Emergency brake shoes were changed. The E brakes should have been adjusted when the Rotors were replaced. The Shimmy you describe can also be the ABS working. The ABS is a pulsating Brake action.

Get your front-end checked first, then as the mechanic road tests it when the Alignment is complete, he can judge the brakes.,

My escape is making a grinding sound, along with pulsating when braking. My husband has replaced the abs sensor, and it is still doing te same thing. Any suggestions what to do next?


The grinding sound when braking is almost surely worn brake pads. If an abs sensor is bad it will set the abs light on. Heres an easy way to figure whether to look at the front or rear brakes first. When braking, take notice as to whether the vibration is felt more in the steering wheel or the seat. If it is more in the steering wheel take a look at your front brakes first, and obviously if it is felt in the seat look at the back brakes first. Both front and rear need to be checked out because the pulsating you are feeling is due to rotors or drums that have been heated up and warped. In order to fix both problems, you most likely will need brake pads and rotors/drums. If you just replace the pads, not only will the pads wear away faster due to the damage to the rotors/drums, but your vibration issue will not go away and infact may intensify.

Will a rear end out of E350 Ford interchange with a Chevy 3500 dually


Is the c/k 3500 4 wheel drive?If it is 4WD,you must retain the same gear ratios for both front and rear axles,or the transfer case will be damaged.If it is 2 wheel drive,you can install any gear you like.I believe the Ford E350 rear axle is a Dana 70,as i have rebuilt 2 of that model,along with Dana 60's.The Ford unit likely will not be a bolt in.It will probably require professionally welding new mount brackets on the Ford axle housing.The width needs to be measured from inside the brake backing plate to the other brake backing plate to see if it will physically fit.Good luck.
